Default Tethering on UMA - NOT!

I just spent the day yesterday between TMO level 3 tech support and my BES provider, trying to figure out why my tethering with my Curve 8320 would not work.

Finally, I called TMO back and happened to mention that I was on UMA. OH! You can't use it on UMA!

I switched off my Wifi Radio and it worked perfectly on EDGE.

So, TETHERING DOES NOT WORK ON UMA. End of story.

The TMO rep had no idea why this was the case, but she really knew what she was talking about and had me fixed in about a minute.

I didn't see this little tidbit anyplace in a search, so I thought it might help y'all.

One of those nice little tidbits of information to remember.

Maybe I'm dense, but why would you need to tether if there is a WiFi signal available? I'm assuming you were tethering a notebook PC?

I do know for a fact that when I was setting up my TomTom to use my 'berry I was on UMA in my house and the TT was able to access traffic and weather through the 'berry. I'll double check it tonight.

I was trying to install and test it and my Tmo reception at the house is terrible, therefore my BB was connected via UMA.

I dont believe this is true because I have tethered while on UMA (when I was setting it up at home for the first time) and it worked perfectly fine. Again not sure why someone would tether when wi-fi is available but in THEORY, it should work. I'm gonna try it out again to see that it works.

If you are on BES, THAT must be your issue.

Not the end of the story, tethering while on UMA does work while on BIS.

I'm on BES and 100% confirmed this afternoon that tethering DOES work over UMA.

Ah-HA! So BES isn't even an issue here!

T-Mobile "level 3 tech support" FAILS! LOL

The first time I tried tethering to my netbook I was on UMA and it just "worked", then I turned off the wi-fi radio to make sure it would still work on EDGE, that's the only reason I KNEW UMA tethering was possible.

Will someone post for me how to tether again please? I had it saved somewhere, but when I tried it, it didn't work with my old laptop maybe it'll work with my new one. Also, the stuff that I change on my laptop, will it still be able to connect to other wifi signals? Or will I have to change stuff back? Thanks in advance!

If you have wifi preffered, then it might be using edge when you tether

If you have wifi only, maybe it won't work then.

Just my 2c.
