Default Tell me why TMO is so behind?

Why is tmobile so behind right now, but over in uk there DA SH*T over here they suck monkey balls. As people are getting ready for 4g were not even close to get good 3g whats up with that. I will say newer and better phone have been popping up though so thats a plus.

Hey, at least they're cheap.
If they were developing 4G network you'd be paying through the nose each month to fund it.

You get what you pay for... TMO is a lot cheaper and a good alternative, but the 3g and soon to be 4g are still not available... Hopefully soon.

This is my opinion and in no way reflects the opinion of Verizon Wireless or its affiliates. Do not consider talking to me a substitute to actually talking to a Verizon representitive, because I often lie. I find it very sad and pathetic that anyone would actually read this far... And to anyone who reads this and thinks its dumb a big middle finger to you.

I'll gladly pay less for a little less coverage. EDGE is more than sufficient for all my needs and while coverage is a tad worse than when I was with Alltel the T-Mobile prices are far superior. I'm paying $54 /mo. for 300 minutes (unlimited weekends make it work), 300 texts, and an unlimited data plan. With Alltel I was paying $47/mo. for 450 minutes (more than I needed and at the time the lowest they had), no text messages (.20 each), and no data. You decide.

What kind of apps am I missing out on without 3G/4G? If it's just the web browser displaying a page a little faster then no thanks. It's plenty fast as is, and I don't want to pay extra for that.

This is why I'm still with Tmo. I did get really frustrated with service/coverage but when I compared my plan w/ others Tmo was waayy cheaper for all the services I have.

Is that accurate? I thought AT&T was first out with EDGE.

Your 8900 is supposedly a modified 2.5G. The real answer to your question about what you are missing is ... not much.

Where 3G helps most people is if they tether their laptops to their phones.

And let us not forget that only T-Mobile offers UMA which beats the pants off of 3G. Most places I go have UMA access so my 8900 is literally already better than a 3G device because my service speeds with UMA are much better than they would be with just 3G.

I'm sorry. It's just that a long time ago I was an English teacher.

"There" is not the same as "their" which is not the same as "they're."

You meant "their."

Not a flame. Just old habits die hard.

I was discussing nearly this same question with a friend of mine, about T-mobile - their selection of phones, their plans and ultimately why a lot of people seem to think they are "behind" when it comes to the other US carriers.

From what I came to understand is this: T-Mobile firstly is a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom, based in Germany.

T-Mobile's business plan primarily focuses on offering affordable packages to the everyday-joe, while slowly building up both it's coverage footprint and hardware offerings.
T-Mobile knows there is no way it can compete directly with entrenched carriers like AT&T or Verizon, and with the saturation of cell phone users in the US nearly reaching it's limit, parent company Deutsche Telekom probably isn't willing to dump billions into the expense of building a network infastructure overnight just to capture what's left available for potential new customers.

I think they are taking the slow road, betting on the appeal of the lower package charges to pull in users, while adding to their network as they go.
This isn't to say T-Mobile wants to be left in the dark technology-wise - their addition of new sidekick models as well as the G1 is proof enough they are trying to appeal to the more tech-savvy consumers... But ultimately, because of their slow development of the network, they will be following behind the two other major US carriers that are actively expanding.

The posistion of T-Mobile as a "low cost alternative" more than likely has a lot to do with their cell phone selection as well - a lot of low to mid-level phones with a few higher-end devices.

At least, that's what was described to me.
The question becomes, what happens when more and more people start opting for those higher-end devices... The ones that push your network a lot further than the clunkers you can get for $30 bucks?
These things love to suck up mobile bandwidth, so not only do you have to increase your network capacity for potential customer expansion - but also for the existing customers that decide it's finally time to get a real smartphone.

In that situation, you're not just playing catch-up with the big boys, but with yourself as well.
Anyhoo, it was an interesting chat.
