AT&T doesn't disable any legacy services when you migrate over during a merger. Plenty of people still have Alltel and Verizon plans and features. You have the option of cancelling your service (or porting your number to another provider, optimally) if you don't wish to have service through AT&T, but if you're under contract from your previous provider, you might still have ETFs to worry about.
Oh well, you can always call AT&T and ask about the migration and cancellation processes for people who migrated from Verizon and Alltel in recent mergers. That way if the merger with T-Mobile goes through, you know what to expect almost a year in advance.
Also, AT&T doesn't have their own version of the BlackBerry Desktop Manager. You connect a Verizon phone to it, you get a tethering icon. You connect an AT&T phone to it, you don't.
