Default T-mobile and smartphones?

Let's say I got a new line with T-mobile and went out to buy a Curve from a 3rd party, no contracts no anything. Can I use the phone on T-mobile without paying for the monthly data charge of $30? Some may say why use a BlackBerry without data, but those keyboards are so sick...and some have wifi, so I can still do some tiny things with web at home. But yea, can I do this?

I've heard conflicting accounts about MMS (picture messages). Some say YES you need a data plan, others say no, you don't.

The MMS may not work but the SMS will, for sure. So yes, you can do it. The BB native browser may not work because of the data plan, but you can always download a 3rd party browser like Opera to use. Not all apps will work but some will.

Yea I was planning on getting Opera on the phone or something. But yea, i think I'm going to go with that even more+ plan because most of the people on my plan want a smartphone without data...which would make discounted pricing on phones pointless.

Yeah makes sense. If you don't want a data on a smartphone, EM+ may be a good idea for you because it's cheaper and you don't need the discounts anyway (no data plan). You can use the extra money to buy phones from eBay.

I currently have a Curve 8320 with Tmobile, BB unlimited e-mail, and no data plan. This works really well, since all I use it for is email and calendar. I occasionally use the internet at home using WiFi. And email service is only $10/month.

I'm thinking of getting an 8520, but want to make sure my BB email still works fine with no data plan. I know Tmobile won't sell you one unless you get data service.

Anyone own an 8520 without a data plan?

we tried it long ago with the first Curve and then the Javelin.

Even if you have the T-Mobile Hotspot you NEED the Data Plan for WiFi to be fully functional off the Blackberry.

I think without Data you get something basic like T-Zones that is really crappy.
