Default T-Mobile 3G is deliciously fast -- here's proof

That's T-Mobile's 3G here, in the middle of Campbell County in VA. AT&T said in January of 2009 that 3G in Lynchburg was their "Top priority" (They just started rolling it out last week).

I've conversed with an iPhone 4 user here in Lynchburg who assures me that he's seeing ~2000 kbps down on AT&T's new 3G network. But as you can see from the above picture, not even in the downtown Lynchburg area, I'm getting 3600.

Chalk this up to another reason I'll be sticking with T-Mobile for the forseeable future.

That's pretty cool. How is your 3G coverage? AT&T 3G coverage is good here, but latency is bad and has dropped calls all over the place. So there is always a different situation going on in certain areas.

Did you use your bberry for the test? if so, you can't compare those speeds to an iphone, you're comparing apples to oranges since bberrys use proxy servers. Try bberry to bberry.

My 3G coverage is pretty solid out here, even in the unincorporated counties (at least the spots along inhabited roads), which is saying something for a city not served by a single interstate (nearest is a minimum of an hour through the Blue Ridge mountains.) The mountains and hills do play a part, but I'm pretty solid no matter where I go.

I did use my BB 9700 for this test. I don't know anyone with another 9700, let alone an AT&T 9700, so I can't test that part of it. I do, however, know several people with various Curves and Sprint & Verizon. Perhaps I'll ask them to run this same test. If anyone in Lynchburg reads, this, PIN me, plz.

I doubt this is HSPA+, as, again, this is Lynchburg, Virginia as opposed to Roanoke (closest big city), Richmond (State capital) or DC. Is there a tool that will tell me the specs of the nearby towers, and if it's HSPA+? I'll gladly report back here if that's the case.

What's absolutely fascinating (and I never forget to bring up to AT&T customers here) is that the closest T-Mobile retail outlet is 2+ hours away. This place is littered with Sprint, AT&T, Verizon, nTelos (local carrier) outlets, but AT&T is just now rolling out their 3G.
