Default T-Mobile 3G Being Added To More Cities/Towns

Just last week while at work, I happen to glance at my 9700 and it showed the 3G icon on it. For years, I've been on EDGE but all of a sudden I'm getting 3G now. I thought it was just a fluke and I kept seeing it on the screen so now I'm convinced I have 3G at work. Could this be because of the TMO/AT&T agreement? Maybe they're using some other band perhaps? I'm curious. Any of you have seen this change? If so, please share. I'd like to see TMO expand their 3G/4G network.

That's great news. As a result of the abandoned AT&T deal, T-Mobile got billions of dollars as well as a healthy hunk of spectrum. I hope they put it to good use.

My one complaint with T-Mobile was the lack of 3G. I honestly probably would have stayed with their coverage and 3G was better but I'm really glad to see that they are rolling out more to their customers.

I do hope they continue to increase their 3G coverage. I am happy with them and I want another phone since my contract was up 31st December 2011. I need to check up on other areas where 3G wasn't available to confirm.

I am pretty sure all that money that DT got, wont be going into the US Tmobile market.

I wish, but I doubt it. They dont want anything to do with the US market anymore. Someone else will eventually buy us, but it will be a rollercoaster ride IMO.

A couple of months ago I called TMO about the coverage around my house (I only have EDGE) and they checked it out and told me there were no plans for upgrades or improvements. I assumed that was because they were waiting for the merger to go through. Since that fell through I called them again last week and will follow up tomorrow but I don't expect any change.

Deutsche Telekom has already said that if the AT&T deal fell through they would still see to sell or break up TMO USA. I don't expect them to be spending a lot of money doing anything other than advertising for new customers.

I hope I'm wrong.

This has nothing to do with the AT&T roaming agreement as your phone has no AT&T 3G support.

These are normal 3G coverage improvements due to investments.. I've noticed more 3G fill in in Las Vegas and 3G has come to Pahrump, NV and Boulder City, NV.

If you only have EDGE at home, I would sit tight in 2012 because the fill-in that I've seen has been pretty much residential and/or for cell sites that provide in-building coverage but have cell sites that are further away and still provide decent coverage outside. In these areas the EDGE signal was much stronger but you had 0-3 bars of 3G/4G coverage (or just EDGE) depending on which building you were in or where you were. Now you usually have 3-4 bars of 3G/4G

I noticed that too, I used to get only edge in my town and now I've been getting 3g with my 9700 for the the very first time ever since i bought it when it was first released.

Yeah but you're paying an arm and a leg for service that's equivalent to what I get in my area. I get 4g everywhere I go and pay much less than you do, not to mention I get 5gb of data for $30/month while you get 2gb for the same price

T-Mobile uses HSPA+ which is now called 4G according to the ITU. Technically, neither was LTE really 4G (but LTE Advanced is 4G), then the ITU decided that they should all be called 4G.

Here is a very informative article from AnandTech. With same bandwidth and number of antennas, DC-HSPA+ is actually faster than LTE but LTE has lower latency.

True BUT why should I have to pay $39.99 for 450 minutes, $20 for unlimited messaging, and $30 for 2GB of data (total of $89.99 before any fees and taxes) when I can get comparable service from TMO for $49.99 on the 500 Minute Value™—Talk + Text with 2GB of data? My service works anywhere I basically travel to (Dallas, New York City, Philadelphia, Las Vegas, and many, many more) Yeah, VZW might have broader coverage and more reliable but I'm more than happy with my service at a cheaper rate. TMO is covering 184 million customers on their HSPA+ 42 with 175 markets and 217 million customers on it's HSPA+ 21, all for a lower price. I'm not one to be speed hungry but people are never happy and want more. That's why we have choice. Choice is good. I just rather pay less.

I actually found out it's actually 4G that was added in the area I work at. I confirmed it with two of my coworkers TMO branded Samsung Galaxy S IIs. We're making progress.
