You can go in any t-mobile store and they ~might~ give you a SIM card free if you purchase a pre-paid T-Mobile card. The best deal is to buy a $100 card because that puts you in Gold status and you then get 1000 minutes that are good for a year and only have to load $10 each additional year to keep them active. The minute rate is higher for purchasing lower denomination pre-paid cards. If you want to call home, you need to dial 611 from the phone and get international calling added.
Another option: If you are near a Sam's Club, go in and ask for a one-day complimentary membership and buy a pre-paid Nokia phone for $9.87. Included is a SIM with $2 loaded on it. This would be a better option if a T-Mobile store wants to charge you $35 for the SIM and you have the Nokia as a spare phone or can sell it on eBay.
