Default T-Mo plans to double it's speeds it 42Mbps download

T-Mobile expands HSPA+ network, plans to double speeds – Android and Me

Quote:
Today T-Mobile announced that their HSPA+ network has expanded to 100 million Americans in more than 55 major metropolitan areas and they plan to double its speed in 2011.

New markets that were launched today include Boston, Mass.; Erie, Penn.; Fresno, Palm Springs and San Diego, Calif.; Miami, Fla.; Richmond, Va.; Spokane, Wash.; and Topeka, Kan.

T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network currently offers theoretical peak downloads of 21 Mbps (which they are calling “4G speeds”), but that will double to 42 Mbps next year as the carrier continues to upgrade their network.

The T-Mobile G2 will be their first HSPA+ handset when it launches later this year. The device has a theoretical max throughput of 14.4 Mbps, which is faster than the 10 Mbps that is being advertised by Sprint’s 4G WiMAX network.

It looks like T-Mobile will continue to refer to their HSPA+ as 3G in the near future, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they eventually brand it 4G. We know it’s just a marketing term, so if the other carriers are going to boast 4G then so should T-Mobile.

Unfortunately it would be useless to blackberry devices unless RIM gets on board with it. Their new devices aren't even HSPA+ capable; for example 9780

But not everyone on here is a RIM user...

There are android users that lurk in the t-mobile and Android sections.

Damn, I'd love to have a phone that could go that fast, as well as being in a coverage area for it!

I would love to get something better than GPRS. It's like driving a Ferrari on donuts.

They have to release at least 1 phone that supports it still.

I thought T-Mobile on their website showed the BB Bold 9700 can use this new speed? Why would BB have to be onboard and why couldn't it use what already exists in the phone (or phone os) for it?

The G2 will be the 1st HSPA+ phone available for T-Mobile. Though the 9700 and the 9300 will be HSPA capable, they will not fully benefit from the HSPA+ speeds.

So my next question is, how will we know if we're on the HSPA? Will it say HSPA where it says 3G now? I live in Anaheim, CA and it says it's live in my city, but how do I tell if I'm on 3G or HSPA?

HSPA will show on a Blackberry as 3G as well as on Android devices. HSPA+ shows as an H on Androids, but no change will be seen on Blackberrys.

This is old news and only one phone exists on TMobile that can exceed 7.2 and that is the not yet released G2. Nice cross blog post though.

This is true to some extent, but very misleading.

Specs of 9700

HSDPA Category 6 (3.6Mbps)

BlackBerry 9700 Specs - T-Mobile Community

Which means, the bold is capped at 3.6 mbps, so you arent really getting a full hspa service (like 21mbps that tmobile advertises)

Difference betwen HSPA+ and HSDPA

HSPA or High Speed Packet Access describes a family of related cellular data protocols.

HSDPA or High-Speed Downlink Packet Access is a particular HSPA protocol and currently provides for speeds of 1.8, 3.6, 7.2 and 14.0 Mbit/s.

this is a huge deal breaker for me. i dont want to be stuck on 3.6 or even 7.2 when others are getting 42 (thereotically of course). this is very disappointing.

Same for me. I want to have the fastest speeds in my newest device. However, I believe the 9700 can exceed the limits they say... Not too sure on the technical aspect of it, but I have experienced VERY fast speeds on my 9700..
