Default Is it still true that tmo doesn't meter data and charge non-data plan people?

Prior to the June 2009 changes, some of use were able to get Blackberry services fully enabled without a data plan because we had an unlimited text plan and wanted to use IM programs.

Because IM uses data, enabling that function opened up use of other apps while on EDGE without a data plan.

I am wondering if data used for IM can be distinguished between data used for browsing, etc. while on EDGE.

The new tmo site shows amounts of data listed on my account but total data usage still shows "0."

From what I understood, tmo either charges for a data plan or doesn't charge for data, there's no billing per MB.

Does anyone know if that's still the case?

That's true. You either have it or you don't. There are no per MB or KB charges that I know of (unless you're roaming outside of US).

Wow thanks Artemis! Think I will buy a GPS receiver.

Originally I thought that if I wasn't on wifi, nothing would work, but I clicked a web link in a text the other day and it went to the site. Google Maps has always worked, but I was afraid to use it.

Guess now I'll be using AIM a lot on EDGE.

Do you have tzones or web2go or something? Just curious?

I always wondered why it worked w/o a data plan. My guess is that for 1-2 months Tmo may let you have free data and wap. I'm not so sure how long it will last but I'm pretty sure you won't get charged. Tmo just doesn't charge by the MB.

I have nothing except unlimited text. They enabled services in May after I switched to a family text plan so I could use MMS and IM. I haven't found anything I can't do or download. Nothing shows on my line in account services online, but I do get the warning saying I have a BlackBerry phone and no data plan. I use my phone 90% of the time at home on UMA/wifi and we also have unlimited hotspots@home.

My husband got a Pearl Flip in June (after the RIM audit) and they couldn't enable his account for IM, but could for MMS. He can only browse on wifi. "BlackBerry Enabled" shows on his line in account services online.

I couldn't possibly imagine Tmo wouldn't have some sort of going rate. What's to stop berry users and anyone else who knows their way around phones to take advantage of this and cancel data plans, thereby making tmo lose out on all that money? Sounds like a huge risk that tmo would be taking, and just HOPING that no one would find out about this. Would you mind keeping us upadted on this?

They did eliminate the ability to do this in June, but I know I'm not the only grandfathered person who doesn't have a data plan as I read about it here before I got a BlackBerry. I have access to wifi nearly everywhere I go so paying for a data plan didn't make sense to me.

FWIW, T-Mobile does state that they charge per MB, but what Artemis is saying is that on a BlackBerry, you either have a data plan or you don't in their eyes.

The whole thing hinged on enabling for IM. It is included in unlimited text so they would enable the phone for that, which in turn enabled it for everything else.

As of June, they will flat out tell you that if you want IM, you have to use a phone such as a Motorola that is text-based IM, but they will partially enable for MMS.
