| | Starting OCt.16, data will now be capped at 5GB http://www.tmonews.com/2010/10/t-mob...-5gb-of-usage/
what do you guys think? i personally have never hit 10Gb with my bb8320 lol due to it being on EDGE, but maybe the newer bb's and android devices?
anyway, how do you reach 10GB or over?

I guess this is what we get for all the abusers. Not a good look, but most people will never reach that threshold anyway.

I bet tmo did this for wifi hotspot on android. They said they won't implement it until they get a plan in place. This is it I guess.
Better than tiered if you ask me.

Look at what happens in area when an emergency happens and everyone tries to make a phone call at the same time, the system isn't designed for that.
This is a necessary evil, TMO allows tethering at no cost, while other companies charge through the nose for it or don't support it at all.
If your using your phone as its intended, you shouldn't hit the cap, but if your doing a LOT of tethering, then you will, and this is what this is likely intended to curtail. With TMOs "4g" network up and coming, I could easily use my phone as my only source of internet, IF they didn't throttle.
But thats not what the phone is intended for.

Quoted from myself in another thread...
I use Wi-Fi too much to notice. I realized recently that I rarely pass 1GB, and I consider myself a very heavy user. I imagine anyone who uses/tethers with their berry more than I do is using the network in a way for which it was never intended.
T-Mobile is the last company to offer the so-called "Unlimited" plan at their price point. I could see how heavy users of the service (how they can use more than 5GB just baffles me) could slow down the network for the rest of the users. T-Mo's own press release said that something like 1% of the users would even notice. Apparently I'm not in that 1%.
Take a look at your data allowance. Log in to T-Mobile.com and check your data usage over the past 3 months. Because of the ubiquity of Wi-Fi, I rarely find myself over that 1GB mark for which you would pay dearly on other companies.
I'd prefer a friendly text message to tell me that the internet is gonna be slower than to get slammed with overages. I would much rather get a flat-priced full-speed-up-to-5GB-per-month-then-reduced-speed-but-still-unlimited amount of data than switch to a tiered plan and get slammed with overages one month where I had to tether more than usual.
If you're that pissed about it, why not switch to Verizon. They'll let ya tether at full speed... for an additional $30.
\T-Mo for life

I download about 5 podcasts, some audio, some audio/video. I use about 3GB a month.
So I easily see if he's downloading a lot more, then he could hit 7GB pretty easily.

But thats not what the phone is intended for. | I am fully aware of this already. However, my point stands. If it's what's allowed per their service agreement, then it isn't abuse. They used to say you could soft cap out at 10 GB. So, if I reached that soft cap, it isn't abuse, it is using what I am allowed for what I am paying for.
I am not arguing the cost of doing business. If they feel that soft capping at 5 GB will save them and eventually all of T-Mobile customers money, then so be it. So, now, if I hit the 5 GB cap, is that abuse? No. It's doing what I am allowed to do per my service agreement.
That is all.

Well, by making it a 5GB cap instead of 10GB...they are changing the service agreement, thus making what was "allowed before" now considered "abuse".
Times are changing and with more and more data being consumed, they have to do something to protect the integrity of the network.
Like I said, give me a soft cap ANYDAY over ATT's crap 2GB plan with expensice overages.

That is all. | To argue from the other side of it...
If your tethering your phone to your pc, that is using it in a way that it was not intended for, therefore it equals abuse.
The network was designed to provide data to the phone, not to a pc/laptop...
As smartphones become more and more akin to the laptops we carry around, then something has to be done to protect the integrity and quality of the networks we connect to.
If your using a BB your are less likely to hit the cap then if you were using an android or apple phone, because of the way that RIM has designed the phones and network to make it as efficient as possible, the only way you would hit that would be to stream full shows/movies, even 5GBs while seemingly small, is quite alot of email, or music streaming.
