| | Running 9700 on EDGE
In the last few days my 9700 has been having issues with data, while sms and phone work fine. My IM apps log out and I have to manually log back in and the browser fails to connect. The 3G logo still has the blackberry logo next to it.
However when I switch over to EDGE, everything works just fine. Is there something going on with Tmobile's 3G? I'm in the Portland, OR area.

There could be an outage, go to a local store and they could tell you. Most likely there's a confliction going on with the data settings. I say this a lot, but honestly, I've had this solve the issue almost every time.
options > mobile networks > data roaming (set to) Off
... pull battery and give it a try. if not, you may just need to replace it. how long have you had it?
ps> keep Portland weird! ;D

I've had the phone for almost a year and it has worked flawlessly..well almost flawlessly..
Now the frets have cracked and my 3G is iffy! I do hope there is some network upgrades going on that is causing this.
I will try your setting change.
Yes..keep Portland weird!

It could be a lose connection inside the device, and I'm beginning to think that this may be the cause of your problems. Sadly, one drop with these things can do a world of damage to antennae, which will cause such service disruptions and infrequency. Almost a year means you are within your manufacturers warranty period, unless it's gotten wet you should come see me and I'll process the exchange for you, I'm at the Sherwood T-Mobile by the big Target.

Also, if you're having troubles sending messages...
Options > SMS Text > Connection Preference (set to) "Circuit Switched" or "Preferred"

I have a Tmobile store just down the street from my house where I got this phone. Will they do an exchange too? Will it be a refurbished unit for manufacturers warranty?

It may be it may not be, but the likelihood is greater for the former. That said, yes, any store can do it. Even refurbed units have new outer casing, it's just the guts that've been remanufactured.

If the 3G antenna is out, would calls still come in? And also the phone display isn't switching from 3G to EDGE, it just remains at 3G even if data is out...you would think that it would switch if it wasn't getting a 3G signal right? Very strange...

3G has nothing to do with calls, so to answer the first question, yes, they would still come in. so your issue is that it's not accurately displaying the data network that it should be on? it stays on 3g but you can't use the apps or internet? is that the problem?

It displays the 3G network even though the data is not working and I can usually tell by looking at my google or yahoo IM apps on my home screen. So if it is an antenna issue, wouldn't it switch to EDGE as it would if it couldn't find a 3G signal?
When I manually set to 2G, EDGE is displayed and everything seems to work fine. I think I might call Tmo later to see if there is some weird 3G outage in my area.

I may have fixed the problem... I connected the phone to DM6 and restored using a backup from 2 days ago and now it looks like 3G is working again. It was the first time I did a backup in months and it messed up my phone. Strange!
Anyway, I'll give it some time to see if all is well.

I would just get an exchange while you are still under warranty.

Spoke to Tmo tech yesterday and they confirmed a 3G issue in my area so I'm going to give it a week or so. Also saw people having similar issues on other devices on the Tmo forums.
