Default question about uma

I'm thinking about switching to T-Mobile. I have some questios about uma. I called the sales dept today and they had no clue what uma was. If I was to get a bb bold 9700 and I had wifi in my apt thru my wireless router, would I be able to use that connection to make calls without using my plan's minutes? Does having the uma feature cost anything extra to use? When on uma, can I still send and receive text messages and use bbm?

Thanks so much for your help!

Yes you can make calls using your UMA. No it does not cost extra. Yes it still counts toward your plan minutes. Yes you can do everything with UMA as you can on the cell network. The benefit from UMA is that you can guarantee having a great signal while at home!

Nope. They used to offer a "TMO At-Home" service (or something that like) that was an extra $10/month. *IF* you had that service, any UMA calls did not come out of your regular minute bucket (so they were free).

They no longer offer this service, so unless you already have it on your plan, you're outta luck. If you do have it on your plan, they will continue to be free where you're grandfathered in. If you change plans, they'll tell you that they can't move your at-home service to your new plan and you'll lose it!

It's free in a sense where you don't have to pay extra for it. It's treated as a regular cell phone so it's free as long as you don't go over your overage.

It will never be "free" otherwise there are people that will use wifi only without subscribing to a calling plan. Why would a company do that?
