Default Question about Instant Messaging Service

Hi, I have purchased a blackberry curve 8520, and is serviced by the $24.99/month blackberry plan, which includes unlimited web browsing only.

On the phone itself, there are multiple instant messaging applications built into it when purchased, such as (1) blackberry messenger, (2) AOL instant messenger, (3) Google talk, (4) ICQ, (5) Yahoo messenger, and (6) Windows live messenger.

Will I be charged for using these applications to send and receive messages from other users? Since I do NOT have the $34.99/month plan which includes unlimited web browsing plus the additional unlimited domestic messaging plan? Or is it completely free of charge under the coverage of the $24.99/month plan which has unlimited web browsing only?

The service provider is T-Mobile

Thanks

According to the TMo website (T-Mobile BlackBerry-Curve-8520), you'd be charged additional fees for the IMs.

You can get a IM plan for $4.99 that will give you 300 text/IMs per month, if you don't want the 34.99 plan.

With T-mobile IM's are billed/considered as text messages. So as tequiaaddict mentioned you need a text plan

well, i just contacted a tmobile representative and they said yes, I will be charged a fee for the IM applications.

however I will not be charged for the blackberry messenger service because it is specific to only blackberry users then it is included in all blackberry plans instead of just the messaging plan.

Which I do not quite understand.

also, are there other ways to use IM's w/o being charged as text? like if I use a different application like palringo or beejive? or use 3rd party web applications such as airaim.com or meebo.com?

That is kinda strange because I was told the exact same thing, but for as long as I have had my 8900 the IM's haven't come out of my text messages. Sometimes I use yahoo IM quite a bit and have checked and checked against my bill and looked online and still have very minimal text useage (just my actual texts).

I don't use IMs much, but when I did, I didn't remember being billed for them either.

The $24.99 data feature is for unlimited Internet/Email services...the Yahoo, AIM, etc. are internet services so you wouldn't be billed for such applications. Actual MMS and SMS services would require that you have that feature...either unlimited for an additional $10 ($34.99 data feature) or 300 for the additional $4.99. However, if you're using a BlackBerry why not take full advantage of the BB messenger? It's well worth it. Also, make sure to download BB AppWorld. So how are you liking the touch pad on that 8520?

I was told that the IM clients on newer BBs (like the 8900, 8520) do not charge texts.

If you're unsure, you can always use beejive. That's data only and much better than the native clients.

Reps will tell you that IM costs texts but I saw they're wrong. I've used native clients on my 8900 and haven't been charged more.

well wturner8, i am very pleased with the 8520 curve. the touchpad is lightning fast and gets to where i want w/o any hassle. and yeah i been told AIM, ICQ, MSN and etc uses internet/data and not text so I would not be charged, but the t-mobile reps tell me different. I suppose they're just trying to bs me into getting a more expensive plan. and i'm very surpised at how fast streaming youtube video's are on this phone. it's almost as fast as my verizon DSL at my home lol.

artemis68 yeah, i heard rumors about that as well. I'm just hoping the rumors are true. I sent out about 2-3 IM's through AOL instant messenger, and then called up #674# to check my messages sent, it remains 0, however it stopped counting after 7pm. I will check again tomorrow afternoon to see if anything went up.

I'll let you guys know how it turns out.

btw, is beejive free?

There's a free trial. But you can get it for 19.99.

It's AWESOME. Good alerts and you can even FB chat. Works over wifi too.

haha i was just kidding xD

another question, when i call #674#, it says as of 09-29 06:39 AM 0 Used, 0 remaining. Bill closed 10/10. To select a discounted TXT pkg, visit my.t-mobile.com [OK]

does that mean i sent/received 0 text messages? because I sent a few IM's just to test it out.

Yeah, if it says "0 used" then you haven't sent any out and you aren't charged.

You tried the IM last night right? I believe it's safe to say that you will NOT be charged. Otherwise, it would be showing txt usage by now.

yeah i did, and i just IM'd again this morning and it continues to say 0. I suppose the rumors about free AIM for new blackberry's with just $24.99 a month internet plan w/o unlimited messaging are true
