Default question about family plans

So quick question, I have been on a family plan for 6 years with tmobile. My line on the plan is eligiable for an upgrade in July. My pearl has finally bitten the dust and I am about to graduate college in December. Question is, if I upgrade in July for the 8900, would I be able to independently take over my line on my own plan when I graduate in Dec? I would just get my own plan but we have a pretty decent plan and I'm too broke to pay for my own yet, heh. If that's not possible, what would you all recommend? I greatly appreciate any and all help!

You need to call their long time customer service and explain it all to them. I imagine they will let you upgrade now (make sure you get a better deal on the 8900 then what they advertise) but that will extend your family plan (for the whole family) out another two years. Other family members can still upgrade at later dates, but that starts the two years over. Once that is done, make sure there will not be an early termination fee for leaving the family plan (by that I mean cancelling the line) and starting your own. That said, you might want to talk to your parents about staying with the family plan for a bit longer as the over all cost savings with you contributing to your parents bill should be much more then you getting an account all by your self. That extra savings will come in handy more the first few years you are out of collage then it did while you were in. Don't get me started on law school loans and kids, then you need all the savings you can muster.

Here's how this all works...first of all you can take your line to your own account when you are ready. It's called a Change of Responsibility and has to be initiated by the account owner. You also need to qualify for credit to have your own account.

As for the upgrade of your line, do it prior to the change otherwise you have to wait out a time period to build account tenure. When you upgrade the phone on your line it will extend your line contract 2 years and that will follow you to the new account when you make the change. The remaining lines on the existing family plan will not have their contracts affected by any of these changes unless they do an upgrade or change rate plans.

Hope this helps!
