Default New BB 8520 w/o data plan vs. WiFi confusion

My gf just got a new Curve 8520. This is her first blackberry.
She has an unlimited text/pic msging plan for $10/month. However, she does NOT have the data plan. According to the sales rep, there is not a way to disable the data feature permanently on the account. We want to make sure we don't use it by accident, and have to pay as you go and rack up the bills!

Is it possible to use WiFi on the BB Browser? How would one configure that, to make sure it doesn't use data? Is it simple as going to Manage Connections | Mobile Network Options | Data Services to "OFF"?

No, that will prevent it from using data over Wifi too.

If your carrier will allow you to use it without a BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) plan, you will not be able to use Email, BlackBerry Messenger, Internet Browser or most third party applications.

Wifi is used to access your BIS plan, if it exists. If there is no BIS plan configured, Wifi can only be used with the Hotspot Browser.

Check the setting at:

Options / Advanced Options / Browser. Set all fields to Hotspot Browser.

Thanks for the quick response.

She's with TMO. She's on the Even More 500 plan for $39/mo with the unlimited text/pic plan for $10/mo.

She used to have a Samsung Behold and totally hated it.
She was able to use Yahoo Messenger for IMing, and it would be counted against the unlimited text/pic plan. I'm not sure if she'll be able to do this again on the BB.

Yahoo IM uses data. Have her change her browser to either WAP or HotSpot browser.
