Default Need some UMA help

This has been an ongoing problem since I bought my first 8320 and now the 8900: when I am on UMA the phone will stay on for a while then drop back to either EDGE or GPRS. Of course when this happens, calls are dropped. I've replaced the routers and the phone. ISP says signal is clean. Any tips to get around this?

turn off your "mobile network" connection and leave your wifi on or vice versa and you'll stop dropping calls.

Do you mean when you are using YOUR router or when you are out and about.

I ask this because i find what I eneded up having to do was just change channels on my home router. Of course you can only do this on your on router and not the rest of the town

use my signature links for UMA....youll need to tweak your router and phone...changing your routers TX channel is gonna make a huge difference....but if your falling off UMA and back to edge you have a connectivity issue with your router......its an EASYYYYYYY fix

This just continues to amaze me. There is no reason for these problems.

Go into "wifi options." Open all your UMA connections. Find the little box that says "Allow inter-access point handover" and ALWAYS make sure it's checked.

Problem solved.

Yes, yes, I know I'm terrific. You're welcome.

yes you can always make sure the box is checked but.... what will happen is after you hang up(or leave the wifi area) you will register on EDGE again and have to reconnect manually to get instant wifi.

Just so you know i didn't just drop calls.. but like you everything would go EDGE. It went from once in awhile to more and more and then 3-4 per call(so I had to keep calling the person back)

Changing the channels is what worked FOR ME.

Although the inter-access point handover check is good for when you are switching between two or more access points with the same SSID, it really has nothing to do with your home connection unless you are using a range expander or multiple access points. There is no handoff between a single router.

Make sure your router is supports and is configured for wireless QoS (Quality of Service). There should be a checkbox to enable WMM (WiFi MultiMedia). If you're router does not have this functionality, the UMA will tend to drop and switch back to EDGE or drop the call altogether. Also, you could experience latency when you talk as the person on the other end won't hear what you say for a second or two. This is the reason T-Mobile was trying to sell or even give away routers when UMA was first introduced.

Actually no I don't get it.

And a mod piling on has little to do with the definition of fairness.

I was only trying to educate him on the technology. My apologies, berryite, for explaining how inter-access point handoffs are utilized.

I'd also like to validate SandAngel's point of changing channels. If multiple routers within an area are all running on the same channel, interference can occur and you router signal can be interrupted. This can cause UMA to drop. Wireless G utilizes only 3 primary channels. The other channels are so close in frequency, they can also cause disruption. View all the wireless routers in your home area and what channel they are on. You would want to be on 2, 6, or 11. Whichever of them is not in use nearby.

Let's be friends. I don't like to fight. Just want to spread the knowledge as I am a big T-Mobile advocate.
