| | My first experiense with 3G :(
I just upgraded to the 9700 from my old trusty 8320. To say the least, the 9700 has been a huge upgrade. Where I live I don't have 3G coverage but the EDGE coverage has served me well for the last 4 years. I was outta town for work this last weekend to Salem, Oregon. I got to the jobsite and realised I was connected to 3G with full service, I received a a phone call from my boss and answered.
We talked for about 3 minutes before I experienced a dropped call! I looked at my phone and it was switcing over to EDGE. After a few seconds it connected back to 3G, so I decided to try the speed test app, I got something like 400kbits down and 30kbits up. Not all that muchh better than edge. Plus I never got dropped calls EDGE.
Anyways I had to get to work and by the time I was done I was ready to get home for the night so I didn't mess around with 3G any further.
I'm heading up to Portland, OR in the next week on my personal time so I guess I can test it out up there.

If you go into the Network Options you can change it so that it only connects to EDGE and doesn't attempt to connect to 3G service.

Yeah I guess it depends where you are.
I haven't tried making a call on 3G when I had (I don't have it where I go to school) but I didn't notice a difference in browsing. The only difference was tethering and loading streaming videos, and it was a bit faster.

The first time I tried 3G, I was impressive for download speed. I found it is noticeable faster than EDGE. I did not run any speedtest.
The issue I have with 3G is after 5-7 days of running from a fresh reboot, downloading speed or browsing will start to slow down to crawl. This happens quicker if I travel to different city. As soon as I switch to EDGE, all is normal at EDGE speed again. Though, all works perfects again once I reboot my device.
However, I hardly get drop call while on 3G.

My wife has a 3g phone and it's much faster then my 8320. I'm guessing 3g coverage depend on area of useage. I live in honolulu and Tmo has been flawless here.

I've read many of problems with the 9700's 3G radio on T-Mobile, problems with it not holding 3G during a call(dropping down to GPRS), slow data, etc.

I have a 9700 and It works perfectly fine on 3G. Had it since release day and have not had 1 dropped call and it constantly stays on 3G. All depends on where you're located in my opinion.

No it doesn't, getting 300kbps down a 9700 only to have 2mbps come in on another device on the same network is inexcusable and there is clearly something wrong with the phone. Calls dropping to 2G from 3G without poor 3G signal being the cause is also another device related issue.

I had an 8900 on Tmo and was quite happy with it. I then upgraded to the 9700 and was dismayed to find 3G fluctuated wildly in Central FL (Fort Lauderdale area). I had to go into the middle of my street to get a signal, a real palava. (And this in an area that had supposed good coverage.)
Took that phone back pronto and got myself an AT&T 9700. Fantastic! |

I had an 8900 before I upgraded to a 9700, and I work at Denver International Airport and get 3G signal everywhere around here. I also get it at home which is around the Denver area works good for me.

I also have just EDGE service in my area and it works great, the first time my 9700 hit 3G the battery did NOT like it, and speeds seemed slower than EDGE.

my 9700 was god awful on t-mobile as well, i have a MyTouch 3g on the same account, and i consistently hit ~3Mbps where the Bold in the same spot is lucky to get 300Kbps.
i ended up selling mine, and going back to CDMA for my 3g blackberry needs as sprint data (even on blackberry) just rocks, and well it's nice to be able to roam if i need too again

I just got my 9700 2 days ago after having an 8900 for a year. T-Mobile just rolled out 3g in my area (Palm Bay in central FL) and I was excited to upgrade to it. I'm noticing my 9700 dropping to EDGE or GPRS often after calls or any data usage and taking a few minutes to return to 3g. It even dropped to GPRS briefly from UMA while i was sitting right in front of my router. My wife's G1 always has a strong 3g signal so I'll see if it becomes a problem

I have no problems with 3g in Las Vegas except for the Luxor, where their hotel kills any 3g coverage regardless of carrier

I only have 2g coverage area where I live and it seems the more I read up on T-Mobile's 3g coverage and specifically with the 9700 is hard to get excited about it once it hits later this summer. Least I am content with EDGE.
