Default May Not be Able to Hang with T-Mobile BlackBerry 9700

So I got a new BlackBerry 9700 and in general I love the device. But I am a heavy SMS user and get tons of SMS alerts during the day. Have found the 5.0 OS threaded SMS to just be horrible. I really just can't stand it.

It's starting to ruin my experience with the 9700 to the point that I'm thinking about selling the 9700 and getting a different phone. I'd hate giving up the BlackBerry but RIM has totally screwed up the SMS functionality on the 9700. It's just horrible. Something has to give. RIM either needs to release a 5.0 OS without this miserable threaded SMS functionality or I probably just gotta move on.

So I've started looking around. Checking out other T-Mobile phone options. It seems that the T-Mobile myTouch would probably be the next best option for me.

Has anyone used the myTouch? Any opinions or thoughts on the myTouch device? Any other recommendations?

I have used the MyTouch and while it is a great phone it is by no means a BlackBerry which makes it a no go for me. At our store it is the best selling android phone and non blackberry device that we carry so no worries about it being a good device.

I personally love the threaded sms feature on the 9700 and 5.0 os, it makes it more organized and cleaner. This is important with my rampany o.c.d. that I suffer from

Perhaps you don't get a lot of text messages and/or the ones you get are mostly from people whom you do a lot of back and forth with. In any event, there are systems to communicate via threaded messages ... they are called IM programs.

I use several news services and business alert programs and this threaded SMS is just junk in processing these.

The threaded SMS is also harder to send even regular SMS messages. It's starting to effect the way I use the phone and I am starting to avoid text messaging in general and I hate reading SMS messages and needing to delete the message and then delete the chat folder everytime I get a message.

It's just total junk.

so i was searching and looking for a way to turn off threaded sms for you because i wasnt knowledgable about turning it on or off, and found out it is apart of the core applications and can't be altered. i personally love it but, that sucks you dont. so goodluck with finding an alternative device.

I get got a my touch 3g & I love it. I also have a 8900 & I haven't picked up since I got the my touch 3g. I love everything about it. Browser, apps etc. Everything I did on my blackberry I can do on the my touch 3g. apps i paid for on my blackberry, I can get the same kind of apps or almost the same app for free on the my touch 3g. Also the touchscreen keyboard isn't as bad as I thought it would be. I type pretty fast on it. Really can't say enough about Android. I'd say go for it. If not check out the Cliq, it has a full qwerty since you text a lot.

That's too bad about the 9700 not working out for you Berryite. My husband had a myTouch, and it was great but he didn't want a data plan, so he turned it back in.

Since the sms feature is so important for you, can you borrow a myTouch and use it before you buy it?

Also don't like threaded SMS, it works great with individuals but screws up twitter and other alert systems. Basically all of my incoming tweets are merged into the one thread and it's a mess trying to read them. I wish we could designate certain numbers not to be threaded like Twitter's 40404.

I wouldn't do anything hasty but there are days where this threaded SMS just kills me. This morning, I got a business alert, my astrology forecast and the morning stock report all in one threaded SMS. It was a mess. This kind of thing happens all day long.

Creating text messages is also harder. And forwarding text messages? Furgetttttt about it.

Boy if I ever found the person who invented this threaded SMS cr*ap, I'd box their ears bloody. They've taken a wonderful technology tool and turned it into a toy at least insofar as SMS is concerned.

We Berry people are usually a tad arrogant about our devices and look down on our iPhone brothers and sisters. Well what is this threaded SMS if it isn't a kid's toy? Serious business users get serious business alert messages and we don't want them bundled willy nilly. If users want a threaded experience, there are tons of IM apps out there. RIM needs to make fixing this a top proirity. I want to see a 5.O OS option without this threaded SMS cr*ap.

Had I known what a nightmare this threaded SMS would be, I would have never switched to the 9700. I did love my 8900. But it was sold and I'm not now going to buy an 8900 to replace it. But a good post and a good thought.

One of the earlier 5.0 builds for the tour had an option to use threaded or non threaded. I found this option either in the main options app or in the message app option screen, I don't eremember.. But this has been taken out/not included in the 9700 OS?

That would be a better route especially considering tgat BBM does SMS now, they could easily have the classic styled SMS for the message app, and allow users to designate which contacts to thread using BBM..

I absolutely love threaded SMS and think it's one of the greatest inventions ever.... except on a BB. Something about RIM's software causes all sorts of problems. The muddled messages Berryite mentioned are just part of the headache. How about when I have a text waiting, and I can't open the thread? There are less than 30 messages in the thread, so it can't be a processing delay. It happens on several different contacts, including ones not in my phone book. It also leaves the new message indicator up if I get more than one message in succession sometimes, until I go back and roll over each individual message. Threaded SMS on Android and WinMo works great. Not sure why BB can't get it right.

This was a large portion of the reason I got rid of my 9700 and went back to my 8900. For what it's worth, 5.0 on the 8900 and 9000 have the same problems. I'm stuck on 4.6 with my 8900 until RIM gets their act together.

If someone sends me a text, the first question I ask is if they are on any messaging programs, because it's easier.

Irritating

Scarinzi: Thanks for your kind offer. I'll accept it if you'll also throw your 2010 BMW for a straight trade on my 2009 BMW.

Let's be sensible here. An 8900 in top condition with all the accessories would sell for $200. A brand new 9700 with all the accessories would sell for considerably more. Why would anyone do something as financially silly as what you propose?
