| | Just got the 9700 a few hours ago..
Had an iPhone 3GS before, but I missed the keyboard. And yes, this is on T-mobile. The 9700 is a T-mobile branded one, so I'm assuming it has service books and such. However, I can't access the internet or anything...I am on wifi but there is a "uma" sign above it..Sorry I'm really confused.
I had the Tour way back when, but it didn't have wifi. I don't have the wifi calling that is found on T-mobile, nor do I have an internet plan. I'm on EM+ plan.
I want to be able to browse and get my gmail over wifi, and I'll fix MMS tomorrow over the phone with T-mobile tech support.

I think I have to get like bolt browser or some other browser on the phone to be able to browse over wifi, but is the Blackberry app world a no-go?
And so far, no internet data charges even though I opened the browser twice..

options > advanced options > browser > default browser configuration
Change that to "hotspot browser"
You will then be able to do what you are wanting to do.

"hotspot browser" will only allow them to access the browser via Wi-Fi areas.

And so far, no internet data charges even though I opened the browser twice.. | He mentioned the applications... you need a BIS/BES plan... The way your worded it you could do everything over HotSpot Browser... which isn't true.
I cannot help it you worded it incorrectly.

Hopefully this won't be too confusing...
options > advanced options > browser > default browser configuration
Change that to "hotspot browser"
You will then be able to browse and get your gmail over wifi.
AppWorld and other BlackBerry native apps will require you to pay for BIS service.

Just thought I'd come back here to mention some things. I had data services turned off thinking I'd get charged by T-mobile, but they don't provide data unless you give consent, which wasn't the case on Verizon. On Verizon, if you accidentally opened the browser on your phone, and it loaded the my verizon page, you'd be charged for a MB if you used just that 100kb or whatever. So got the browser working by changing that.
Learned about UMA and loving it in my dead zones at some places I visit. Downloaded the latest Blackberry App world from the official Blackberry site, and it works fully. No issues whatsoever. What don't work are some quirky things like the native Twitter app which is integrated into the OS. The Facebook app doesn't load up. I don't know what the issue is there. And I can't get g-mail to work over wifi. I can visit the web page, but the app doesn't work. And that just might be the dealbreaker. I understand the "push"ness of the OS and the apps, but I don't give two sh*ts.
I want my email to auto-check every 15 minutes if there is wifi, and to not do anything if there isn't. I tried the "LogicMail" app, and it's crap. It really sucks, and it's making me want to switch to another device.
I know a lot of people say, well that's how a blackberry works...I know this, I had a Blackberry with data and it was perfect, but it should be able to work without data. ****, I don't even think the gmail app is linked to push from BB servers..
Just my rant, I'll try to live with LogicMail for a little, but it's so sh*tty, I'm probably going to switch back to the iPhone.

Pay for a data plan like the rest of us or go back to your iFail, you can't have your cake and eat it to.

Like I said in the beginning. You need a BB DATA PLAN. There's no point of owning a BB without one. Some people never learn.....or listen =-0

.................................................. .........can you hear me now? | Oh sh*t, now I need a data plan to use my PDA. But wait...why does Android and iOS work over wifi just as well as using the data network?
Loud and clear, it's just bullsh*t that's spilling out of your mouth. I've lived with different smartphones without data which were almost as fully functional as the same smartphones with data. I'll also come out and say BB browsers suck, Opera, Bolt...anything and everything currently blows, except for their Webkit browser...but that's OS6 only.
When I did have data on my Tour, I used it mainly to tether. NEVER bbmed because even the people that do have blackberries get unlimited text to talk to non-blackberry folk. I don't see any other point besides Push e-mail...which if I needed that bad, I'd pay for the internet. Just seems that BlackBerry OS loses a lot of functionality because it's designed to not work through wifi. Whether it be security issues, or just a blatant attempt to get users to purchase internet, it's wrong and really cripples the device. I need a workaround to get a mail app to work over wifi, you don't see anything wrong with that statement.
Oh and one more thing, I only set one stinkin alarm clock either weekdays or everyday. That's plain old stupid. Why this functionality isn't built in, I don't know. iOS and Android have this natively, on BB I have to buy an app, and no not a nice, cheap 99 cent app, but a f*cking 5 dollar app. WTF.
The only reason I'm sticking with the BB for now is because of the dang keyboard. No keyboard I have tried even compares to it.
Okay, more on-topic, has anyone found a better mail app that works with gmail over wifi because Logicmail is pretty bad..

I've never used the Gmail app, but that might have to do with the application's capability rather than RIM itself. Apps like Pandora can use a WiFi connection. It also might be for security reasons like you mentioned which I think is a reasonable explanation since RIM prides itself for having good security.
Also, you can setup custom alarms through the calender. I'm pretty sure of that.
Have you tried tiggit? I haven't used it myself, but it works over WiFi for gmail. It does cost money though. tiggit mail POP3 and IMAP client for BlackBerry
