Default Internet works on T-Mobile w/o data plan, WTF?

So I got my BB a couple weeks ago, and I love it so far. This site has been very very helpful in getting to know how to use it efficiently and I can honestly say it will take a miracle to get me to switch back to a non-BB phone.

I have the wi-fi version (UMA rocks) and I dowloaded the Google Maps and GMail apps to see if they worked over wi-fi even though I read they didn't. To my suprise they did, gmail logged in and I was able to check my inbox, gmaps streamed map data just like on my friend's AT&T BB. Then I disabled wi-fi and they were working perfectly on EDGE as well, I'm assuming they are using the EDGE data connection even when the phone is on UMA. Browser and Viigo work aslo. I have unlimited text messaging but I DO NOT have a data plan of any kind.

Did I fall through the cracks somehow or are they counting megabytes only to rape me when my pay period comes up? I don't wanna call them to find out and potentially ruin a great thing

I would look at your account on mytmobile.

T-Mobile might charge you for internet time w/o the data plan.

Just checked my service details and summary, there is no record at all of any megabyte count or of data meter. I guess we will find out in a week when my bill comes lol.

In this case, since you got it off of eBay... you may end up with unexpected charges. The only reason it is working is because there is some service book or remnant from the original owner's data / internet plan. I think calling TMobile would be best to avoid unwanted charges racking up!!

You may also wanna check and have them 'release' the PIN from the previous owner's account, so if you do end up adding BIS you will not run into trouble down the road.

P.S. : TMobile can tell what device you are using without you telling them... so I am pretty sure they know you have your Berry. They do not care what device you use, frankly, as long as you are paying your bill and giving them $$$ every month!

I have actually been on the phone with them a couple times since I got the phone, first to add unlimited texting and then to fix an issue with MMS, so they know I have a Blackberry curve as I spoke to their BB department. EDGE data didn't work a week when I first got the phone, but as of about 8 days ago I can pretty much do whatever I want. I just tried internet radio with the new XPlayer and that works too. Hopefully that is more clear, I didn't quite explain it fully in the original post.

My billing cycle ends tomorrow so we will find out soon.

Yea, its fine. T-mobile always had that problem which kinda works out for us. When you subscribe to tzones or any internet plan, all they do is turn on certain ports for your device! They do not count kb...

I guarantee you that you dont have "total internet."

How?

from your bb browser goto, http://mobile.blackberry.com
if you cant access that website and gives you a error, that means your total bb internet port is blocked...
