Default insurance question on 8900

My friend accidentally dropped her 8900 into water today and now it's not working. She has been paying insurance with TM for years. She's on the phone now with the insurance co for TM and they are telling her that even though she's been paying for insurance for years that she still has to pay $180 to get her phone replaced.

My question is is this normal for an insurance claim with TM? Considering the insurance is over $5 a month this seems to be a pretty big waste of money. It would make more sense to save the $5 a month and buy a new phone if something happens to the phone.

I'd really appreciate any help anyone could give me on this situation.

You are correct, you would be much better off putting that $5.00 away each month. Insurance for cell phones is pretty much a waste IMO. I pay cash for my phones, no contracts, and I come out way ahead in the long run.

There IS a deductible your friend would have to pay, but $180 seems REALLY steep. As embarassing as this might seem, I had to do an insurance replacement on my device less than a week after getting it. I payed the $120 deductible (or so) but in my case, it was better to pay that amount, as opposed to paying $550 for a brand new phone.

Depending on how long your friend had that 8900, I would be looking into her upgrade options. It might be less expensive to do an upgrade on her line, than dishing out the $180 for a phone that is now discontinued. Whatever you do, do NOT threaten to switch carriers because of this, because it won't do you or your friend any good. All the wireless carriers use the same company (Asurion) which provides handset insurance.

$180 seems high, it should be $130. Either way after I would've just dropped the insurance a long while ago because the 8900 is way past of it's life cycle.

Asurion handles the insurance claims, not T-Mobile. Their site is phoneclaim.com.

I got my Touch Pro 2 for free and when I lost it, the $130 was easily worth the money+ it was still selling for over $250 with a new agreement and more private party. I also have the extended warranty bundled in ($5.99 all-in) so it's been worth it for me to keep, but on an 8900? Nope.. as it stands the 9700 has high resale value right now and I would probably get it with that phone as well.

Thanks for the responses. She is going to look into upgrading to a 9700 rather than replacing the 8900.

As for the insurance I think I'll keep it on my own 9700 until the replacement cost gets under the deductible.

When my 8900 quit working 7 weeks ago. I got a 9700 as an insurance replacement since TMO does not issue the 8900 anymore. Yes I had to pay $120 deductible
