| | Insurance question
So I broke down last nite and bought a 8900 to replace my dying 8320. I couldn't be happier. I still have the asurion insurance for my 8320. Can I cancel that and call tmo to switch my policy to the 8900? Reason I ask is because I bought this phone used.

Yes, you should be able to switch the insurance. Warranty is only for new phones, insurance is for both I believe.
P.S. congrats on the Curve! |

Thanks! Now that you mention warranty, is that void since I bought used?

It really depends on your carrier, but most likely yes. I know AT&T won't honor the warranty unless you bought the phone from them.
Verizon does, sometimes. I bought my Storm used and wanted to get it replaced and they had no clue when it was purchased or whatever but they honored the warranty because the phone came out in November so there was no way it could be over a year old. T-Mobile, I'm not sure though. That's something you'd probably have to ask them.

If you've bought the phone through ebay or craigslist, then the warranty won't show up on the device in the system. It'll be listed as *warranty unverified*. Typically if you buy the phone through T-Mobile, whether online or in store, your insurance is just applied to the new device. In essence the insurance covers what ever your SIM is in (T-Mobile phone wise). I know people have tried to claim insurance on the Apple iPhone and it won't work. Apple has the rights to their own insurance program.

If the insurance thing doesn't work, get an external policy from a place like SquareTrade. Pay 90 or so upfront for protection for years. No monthly charges. If your phone breaks, you get money back, not a refurb.

Insurance is good to have whether it's through the carrier or an external policy. Artemis's suggestion sounds like a better deal though. Seriously, w/ATT it's like $4.99 per month & the replacement would be a refurb. Whereas you can pay $90 upfront and you get a new phone.

Insurance through Asurion for T-Mobile replaces your phone with a brand new one, sent over night.

Refurbished or brand new, you would never be able to tell the difference between them unless you took one out of a bb box. Just enjoy your phone and make sure you got it covered

Warranty Exchange = Refurb
Asurion Insurance Claim = New

What was wrong with the 8320?
They seem to be pretty tough if you ask me. The page rendering is always very snappy provided your memory hasn't dropped below 12mb.
Not trying to make this a 8320 vrs 8900 thread, I understand that technologically speaking the 8900 is superior to the 8320. Just not so much better that all 8320 users should run out and buy one. Especially with the ONYX on the way.

Especially with the ONYX on the way. | Don't get me wrong, I loved the 8320. It was my first BB and definitely got me hooked. I've had it ever since release date on t-mobile and it just got really banged up for me. (Even had invisishield on it since the beginning and it started to get nasty).
My biggest problem was the sluggish menus (even after the usual performance tweaks posted around here) and my screen was cracking.
So far, from what I've seen though, the 8900 is a huge upgrade for me.
PS: Thank yall for your insurance/warranty information |

Asurion Insurance Claim = New | Incorrect. Insurance has the right to send recondition equipment or brand new depending on what is available. But the insurance covers ANY phone used on the line. You do not have to "update" that information with them. Simply use the new phone and make sure your paying for the feature. You'll be fine. Just remember you have a deductible!

If they (T-Mobile through Asurion) had to replace it, it would be replaced with a carrier version of that used phone or the closest to the "used" phone that the carrier has.
The example that customer service gave me was, if I were to buy a used Storm and it was replaced under insurance, I would get a Bold or an 8900 as it's insurance replacement.
As for the warranty, that goes away as soon as it leaves the original owner. Your 8320, if it still had warranty left, could be replaced under warranty up until the day it's warranty expires.
At least that is what customer service tells me when I called a few mins ago.

T-Mo rep told me over the phone ( just today) about getting refurbished phone via Asurion.
