Default I have a ? about using a TMO mobile broadband hotspot & UMA

I have a TMO Mobile Broadband Hotspot and when I have my 9700 connected and make or receive calls they are choppy. I spoke with TMO tech support and they told me that will happen due to the latency with the hotspot device.

When I went into the hotspot web interface I see a tab for PORT FORWARDING. I remember when I began with TMO and had problems with UMA at home they told me I needed to open ports UDP 500 & 4500. So I asked them if doing this on the hotspot would make a difference they said no.

I'm thinking they don't want it to work because then all of my calls will be free UMA.

So is anyone here using this device and able to make & receive clear calls? IF so what did you do?

TIA

Every VoIP service I've ever used (CallVantage, Vonage, PhonePower, TMo UMA) has come with the caveat that it will not function properly on wireless internet due to latency issues. You can try going to pingtest.net and test whether your latency happens to be consistently low enough for VoIP.

I'm using a t-mobile branded d-link wireless router (no longer available through the t-mobile store, but can be found cheap on ebay) and my UMA calls sound better than on the t-mobile network and even rival my landline phone on sound quality...

OP is referring to a Wi-Fi hotspot that routes data over the T-Mo mobile network. Over-the-air wireless data networks usually have (much) higher latency versus wired Cable/DSL internet, which precludes UMA, SIP and other VoIP.

There are a lot of posts on crackberry forums that talk about how to configure your router for good performance of UMA. Do a search in here as well as via google and you'll find what you need.
