Default Help me understand Wi-Fi and UMA

Hey everyone,

I just got the 8900 the other day and I have a few questions. I am sorry if these have been asked and answered but I have been reading through many pages of other posts and I just don't see anything.

I got signed up for the T-Mobile hot spot 9.99 a month deal, so I can make phone calls using the wi-fi connection. But I never know if it's working or not.
The wi-fi black and white icon is lit up, but then my calls still deduct from my minutes.

Up in the corner sometimes it says EDGE, sometimes it says edge, sometimes it says UMA, sometimes it says sos , and once i even saw one that started with a G. I have no idea what these all mean or what I should be looking for in terms of knowing when I'm using the hot spot rather than my minutes.

Anyone know ? Thanks so much.

EDGE: You can use the phone, send and receive email messages, PIN messages, SMS text messages, and MMS messages, and use the browser with a high-speed data connection.

GPRS: You can use the phone, send and receive email messages, PIN messages, SMS test messages and MMS messages, and use the browser.

edge, GSM, or gprs: You can use the phone and send and receive SMS text messages and MMS messages

SOS: You can only make emergency calls.

OFF: Your connection to the wireless network is turned off

X: You are not in a wireless coverage area

UMA: You can use the phone, send and receive email messages, PIN messages, SMS text messages, and MMS messages, and use the browser using UMA instead of a mobile network connection.

uma: You can use the phone and send and receive SMS text messages and MMS messages using UMA instead of a mobile network connection.

Wi-Fi Symbol + Wi-Fi network name: You can send and receive email messages and use the browser over a Wi-Fi connection.

Faded Wi-Fi Symbol + Wi-Fi network name: Your device is connected to a Wi-Fi network but is not using UMA or does not have access to Blackberry services over the Wi-Fi connection.

Faded Wi-Fi Symbol: Your connection to a Wi-Fi network is turned on, but you are not in a Wi-Fi coverage area.

This is all in the Blackberry Reference Guide that came with your phone. I would suggest looking through that to learn about your new phone.

When you want to be using the Hot Spot rather than your minutes you are looking for the UMA indicator.

Great guide Kasi very comprehensive!

If you want to use UMA but the symbol isn't there, then move closer to the router. That usually works for me.

With the HotSpot add-on, make sure you scan for networks in your area with the WiFi set-up feature. From there it will allow you to change everything the way you want and give you WiFi and UMA.

Lol. Thanks! That is straight from the Blackberry Reference Guide that comes with the phone. I looked on here to see if I could find a thread on the topic but couldn't, even though I'm sure there is one buried somewhere on this site.

I think I'm going to create a thread for it so others can find that information easier.

UMA and uma mean you're making/taking a UMA call using HotSpot minutes.
