Default Google Voice/ My Faves

I have been using Google Voice as two of my MyFaves numbers, one incoming and one outgoing. I generally use it as my work number, as I can't see carrying two phones or paying out of my pocket for work calls.

Anyway, Google voice just did an upgrade with direct dialing. I THINK if I upgrade I will lose the ability to make "free" outgoing calls. Does anyone in a similar situation have any input?

UPDATE from Google Voice Blog: The Google Voice update features “direct access numbers” which lets users place calls much faster. Until this update, the Google Voice app had to make a request to the Google Voice server which added some lag to the service. With Direct Access Numbers, users have a unique phone number assigned to them for every person you call. This means you no longer have to access the server each time you make a call and the whole process is faster.

well, you can use the mobile site to place calls- callback w/ your number. you can keep your existing version of gv. or you can use your smart dial on your bb which i use. it's like a calling card

The way I understand it, it should work if you use a dialer program for call-outs AND use your actual Google Number in Faves (not the access numbers).

If your GV number is one of your Faves, call-ins are free if you have your caller-ID set up correctly.

You'd need a dialer program to call-out (GV Dialer, the forum favorite seems to be broken now, and development long stopped). Or you can dial online from your phone browser and connect that way for free calls.

A bit cumbersome, but the free calls should still work if you are set up right, at least in theory. Someone will correct me if I am wrong.

if you want to try the smart dialing method- a bit annoying but its free and it works:

go to phone>options>smart dialing>in office extentions, put your gv number
in "wait for" 3 sec
in ext length: unknown

then go to each of your contacts that you'd like to dial out and input into a number field: [Pause][Your GV Pin][Pause][2][Pause][Number to dial][#]

to dial out w/o numbers in address book:
set a speed dial to
[Pause][Your GV Pin][Pause][2][Pause]

just make sure to have google setting set that when you call your gv number to forward to vm not ring

i found this method here in the forums but cant search for it at the moment.
