I believe what you want to do is unlock your phone first. When I was in Iraq I had a Iraqna (name of phone company) prepaid phone. Now I never called on it but for 30 I could text home everyday. This was in 05 so I'm sure things are cheaper now. Hope this helped ya and keep your head low.

Thx for the info. What I was going to do and I have confirmed this is bring a WI-FI router with me because all the rooms have internet in them, and use it that way.

I have a friend who's going over to Iraq this summer. What's the best way for him to keep in contact with home with his blackberry? Is it true Tmobile's will work over there? Are there roaming charges?

any help is appreciated!

Thanks.

You'll want to look into the international Blackberry plan that would be needed to use data services while overseas.

I am located in Taji Iraq, and first of all thanks to whom ever came up with this great idea of crackberry.

My blackberry works well there are few things to consider, hopefully my follies will assist you and you will not be banging your head against a t-wall while trying to get your email.

1. T Mobile and Verizon work well here.

2. Make sure your phone is unlocked, i called T mobile explained i was being deployed and vola 2 days later they emailed me the unlocked codes for free. Kudo's to T-Mobile customer service.

3. Sign up for Free International Service

4. Choose the travel worldwide email plan, you can email free and receive free. I have been watching my bill on line and so far "the man" does not seem to be billing me per email.

5. Get a local sim card, I use Asia Cell but on some FOB's and COB's Iraqna works well. I have not found out how to receive my emails using the local card yet, still searching, but phone calls and sms are good to go.

6. If you are on the Victory Base Complex just sign up for Magic Island Technologies (wireless) and you can get your email and net direct to your blackberry, runs about 60.00 US a month.

I am still trying to push the limits of the communications gear here, but good luck and happy hunting.....

CPT Jimmy
