Question Getting around ridiculous upgrading fees

Is it a good idea to cancel your phone plan (when your contract is up) and just start all over again (with same company) just to get a new phone you want? It seems idiotic for an existing customer to pay more than a new customer for the same phone! is this possible or is it better to switch companies... even though I am satisfied with the service T-Mo has given me? all input will be greatly appreciated!

When your contract ends, sign another with tmobile and get a new phone at a discounted price.

You still pay less by upgrading.. first time customers are charged activation fee of 35 bucks. Canceling would also cause you to lose your number.

Thats not necessarily true...im a federal employee and not only do I get special device pricing....I get activation fees waived....so what in my case?

Ive thought about the same thing.....TMO is the only carrier that does this...its not even worth signing a 2 year contract for 100 credit...il pay retail and go month to month....Tmo needs to fix that...guarantee It'll increase their RGU's.

As far as changing numbers goes......who cares....change it and give it out....

There is a better way......call retentions and tell em your bailing...if you've been a "good" customer" you'll most likely get re-upped on a 2 year with a free device of your choice....although I dont advocate escalating every time....beter to escalate and save a good customer than to lose em over pricing on a device.....

too many people advocate escalating far too often....if people keep wanting to push the issue were gonna start seeing escalations ability to correct issues get watered down.....we dont want this....

Oh and sales rep's and customer service folks....why do we have to go one step above you to get our answer.....its like you take pleasure in saying no....or LOOKING for a reason to decline..havent you figured it out yet....well just call back and go over your head....try working with REASONABLE....GOOD HISTORY customers and finding resolutions....ok off my soapbox

thats how corporate America needs to think.....imho

Let me ask a question. Does arguing with Customer Service and their Supervisors for times in excess of thirty minutes and above, really worth fighting them for eighteen dollars?

I was with ATT not too long ago, and they were willing to give me upgrades that would take off like $50 on a $400 phone. I said are you kidding me?! I asked them what it would take for me to become a "new" customer. They said that after not being a customer for 6 months then I could go back to them as "new." Well, I don't know about you, but I can't find any 6 month contracts out there!

Soooo, I shopped around and got T-Mo cause they gave me 3 free phones (2 Pearl 8120's and a Razr 2), free shipping, no activation fee, and their rates were lower than most. Now... when it comes to upgrading with them... not too sure how that'll work out. But I'd rather switch companies and get free phones... especially when most companies allow you to carry over your current number.

T-mo is not the only carrier that has an upgrade fee, its a wireless industry standard. Do your research!

Why does everyone want a handout when it comes to cell phones? Im sure you dont ask for free food at the grocery store you've been shopping at for the last 5 years. I know I dont. The problem lies with people wanting what they cant afford. If you cant afford data phones go buy a nokia flip.

"Give me this bread and eggs free or I will have to speak with your manager!" LOL

Really people. Get -real-.

Verizon doesn't have an upgrade fee at all. If an existing customer comes into my store, they pay the same thing a new customer would on the device, but they don't have to pay activation fees. And if they're a VIP they get a discount a lot of the times on the device price as well as accessories.

This is my opinion and in no way reflects the opinion of Verizon Wireless or its affiliates. Please take any advice/comments I may give as my opinion and nothing more.

Verizon doesnt need an upgrade fee. With Vz Navigator, you can pay an unnecessary fee each month, instead of just once when upgrading! Yay!

You don't pay for VZ Navigator if you don't want it. It's a feature just like everything else that can be added or removed.
