| | Free international calls from USA using UMA
Can anyone please help shed light on the fact that I can make international calls with UMA using a samsung t409 phone from the USA for free but get charged for the same call using any BB with the same UMA setup?
I use my samsung phone and call overseas from the USA and it will not even show up on my account but when I do the same with my BB 8900, I get charged. Has anyone experieced this? Is there something I could do to my BB to dumbit down to the samsung level in the UMA world?
Thx

If you are overseas and use UMA to make a call within the US, it's free. If you are overseas and use UMA to make a going outside of the US, you'll get charged. This is regardless of phone.

I am stateside and I use the UMA to make free international calls daily. I call from my Baltimore location to Belgium daily and I still have never seen it appear on my bill. It only appears if I use my BB phone. On the samsung, once i put it on airport mode and activate wifi, all internatonal calls are free from Baltimore, MD. But when I do the same with my BB, I get a U + charge.

That's very strange. I never heard of this.
All I can say is that you're *supposed* to get charged for international roaming even on UMA when you're IN the US and call abroad (but not vice versa).
Is this a glitch of some sort?

Is this using the same SIM and the same plan?
Is this a BB plan or the Samsung plan for Data?
My Roomie has a older Shadow, and his data plan for the longest time allowed this (Overseas call while on WiFI) once he changed to a different phone his data plan also changed (during early 2009 before the new plan changes) and he lost that "feature". But before he lost that "feature" he did try my 8320 because he did like the keyboard, and in Wifi only mode, he got dinged for the calls to the UK and Germany, but the same calls back in his phone, no charges. So I'd say it was either a glitch or a feature of the plan he had at the time. But according to CS he should have been charged for all international calls from the state side.
Personally I would say this. if it's working with phone X, do not F with it or you may soon start getting charged.

I believe it is because the samsung has the "airplane mode"; if bb had it, the same thing would be possible.

airplane mode means that all the wireless connections are off. BB can do the same thing by turning all the connections off.
If you're getting free international calls on your samsung using UMA, it's a fluke.

On that samsung when you turn airplane mode on you can still activate wifi and place international calls for free, so yea bb has something like that but it does not work the same way since you get charged.

****, I'd give my left arm to be able to make free international calls from my BB. Besides skype, I don't know any other way. There's no free lunch, buddy.

Both devices are able to connect via UMA as well. So trying to say the samsung has some mysterious way to connect and make free international calls is a pile of crap without some other, technical explanation. Does that clear it up for you?

I tried it myself and the following month I checked the bill and the calls do not even show up in the records. Probably a glitch they have not caught yet, but it does work.

It absolutely, positively has nothing to do with an airplane mode on the samsung. This is most likely a billing or feature error. If you were to swap the sim out of the samsung and put it into the Blackberry, it should work the same way. Also, UMA dosen't care where you initiate the call. If you're on UMA, you are considered to be on T-Mobiles voice/data network regardless of your geographical location.
