| | email/IM with no BIS/BES/wifi
I have no data plan, so it seems to me that I can read email and IM only through wifi, and only using third party applications.
People and T-mobil representatives ;-) keep reminding me that I should
get one of the BB data plans just because I have a BB.
This would be fine with me, and I would just quietly resign paying for any such additional plan, however I am upset because:
One of the 4 phones under my account is NOKIA 6301 phone, and my daughter with this phone can check her email and she chat through Instant Messenger ANYWHERE, with no additional fees/plan, no additional application, and with no wifi.
I feel like I am handicapped just because I have a BB.
What's up with that?

Search for "Will Wifi work on Blackberry without Data Plan?"
There are a list of WIFI only apps.
News Reader - AP Mobile
Email Client - LogicMail
Instant Messenger - Palringo Instango
GPS Mapping - MGMaps
Online Radio - Flycast Radio Pandora
Fast HTML Browser - Opera Mini
Weather Update - BBWeather
App Store - App Store
I did not find these. It is a collection from another forum. Go search it.

| | My point exactly!
This is my point exactly!
Why do I have to spend days searching for third party applications, while the Nokia 6301 can do email and IM with NO WIFI and NO data plan!!
Is this about T-mobil, about BB, about the Nokia 6301, or about my account?

Since you dont have a data plan, call tmobile blackberry support and ask to add the blackberry feature enabler. This will add a small amount of functionality to the phone.
Unfortunately the Blackberry is really a device locked to a service, not just a phone. You don't get all of the features when you the phone, you subscribe to them. They don't tell you that in the ads, but you need a Blackberry data plan to be able to use it.
Also, how does your daughter check emails without a data plan or Wifi on a nokia 6301?

I strongly doubt the nokia phone is able to do all those stuffs without wifi or data plana. What on earth does it use to get online then? She probably has a data plan you are not aware of or has a workaround enabled in her phone. Any phone regardless of brand will not connect to the internet unless there is data connection or wifi or maybe, that specific service/ or site is free to surf. There are certain sites that I can go to on any phone because it is provided free by my carrier.

I am the main account holder, so I can confirm that the there is no data plan, unless you count the unlimited messages for families.
The nokia 6301 has a built-in pop mail reader that does connect through T-mobile to other email accounts. no data charges, though.
It also has a built in IM client. It does not have a browser.
Even my son's cheap Samsung Catalyst can do IM with no wifi and no data plan! These phones are too simple to do any workaround.
I was hoping someone else has similar experience and will explain it to me.
Right now what I suspect is that t-mobile forgot to turn of, or can't turn of data usage for those two phones.
Probably I will search for a nokia or t-mobile user group.

So the blackberry expert at t-mobile is telling me that
although I have unlimited domestic messages for the whole family,
which includes unlimited IM, I cannot do IM because I have blackberry
and that would require separate internet/data package.

i do NOT like this practice either.......theres no excuse for getting rid of the BB enabler.......it forces you to make a choice....yess bb + 24.99 minimum......or go to another device......might backfire on em....but i doubt it.....either way its still a bad practice

What's up with that? | There is no reason you should feel handicapped because you have a BB. You probably don't really need a BB though... if you could get a Nokia like your daughter's and that would allow you to IM and email.
No phone is right for everyone. You should assess what you need for yourself and select the phone best suited for your needs.

Most phones can IM without a data plan. I did that before I had a BB. All of the IMs count as texts. Nowhere does tmobile say that you need a data plan on ANY phone to IM.
Now for the BB you gotta get one.
As for the email, I'm not sure why email is coming thru though. Maybe it works like IM so emails count as texts? No idea.
I agree, it stinks for customers now because you HAVE to get a data plan to do what you're talking about. If you have wifi you can get around but it doesn't work for everyone.

There was a post SOMEWHRE on the forums about a month ago where someone was talkig about the certain Nokias NOT needing a data plan to get GMAIL. Can anybody remember or find the post? I searched but came up with nothing.
Something about 2 different Nokias(i foget which ones or if it was 1 or 2)) being about to do this.

What's up with that? | Hmmmmm..... "A great stylish full-featured phone if you don't need a smartphone" - Nokia 6301 (T-Mobile) user review and rating - CNET Reviews
If you can get this phone for $29.99, and it has email without a data plan, maybe you should run out and get it.
