Default Is EDGE on T-Mobile 3G?

hey

ok i was at the mall today, and i went to the tmobile store and asked them what "g" is EDGE. they said 2g... verizon said EDGE is the gsm 3g while 1xev is the cdma equivilent of 3g.
i went to the sprint store and they said boostmobile is gsm and same network type as tmobile and att. (which is wrong cuz i know its iden, not gsm).

my question is, what "g" is EDGE (on tmobile), and if its not 3g, what is the "3g" name for it (like 1xev is the 3g for cdma, whats gsm's?)

Here is a link that may at least give you a little insight. It is a little old as it was written when EDGE was still prominent and prior to 3G. The best analogy I have heard is that EDGE is 2g or 2.5g.

Wireless broadband | EvDO speed | EDGE speed

I was told that EDGE is 2.5G.

EDGE is 2G on T-Mobile and AT&T. T-Mobile does have a 3G device now however, the Bold 2.
Verizon and Sprint's 3G equivalent is 1XEV. If someone is getting 1xev, that is different than 1XEV. Lowercase letters mean no data.

From CNET:

GSM: Global System for Mobile Communications. This 2G (about 9.6Kbps) digital network is most pervasive in international markets, although it's made significant headway in the United States.

EDGE: Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution (or Enhanced Data GSM Environment), a 2.5G enhancement for GSM with a theoretical top speed of 200Kbps, although real-world speeds will be closer to 90Kbps

UMTS: Universal Mobile Telephone Service, the 3G service that GSM carriers AT&T and T-Mobile plan to roll out for its subscribers. UMTS boasts speeds of up to 2Mbps, although users will typically see speeds in the 300Kbps-to-400Kbps range.

I would have smacked them, then laughed in their face, then felt really bad that these are the people we go to for questions about our Sprint phones. WOW!

Wow, I find it pretty scary that a cell phone rep would say that boostmobile is gsm. Granted, boostmobile has SIM cards, but they are iden, not gsm.

I mean yeah, reps say stupid things sometimes, but that's just ridiculous. I could see some customer believing them, not knowing any better, then may make a poor purchase choice based on that misinformation.

yeah i just walked out of the store once the sprint rep told me that thing about boostmobile being gsm cuz of sim cards. it iwas rediculous.

anyways thanks. the tmobile rep at the time said "well edge isnt anything, edge is just well edge". i then asked "well could my phone get 3g instead of EDGE" he said "yaeh the 8520 can get 3g" . i said "well my phones edge". the rep said "you would have to travel to pittsburgh for your 8520 to get 3g coverage.

anyways i had a question, is there any way (like buying a micro chip or something) that can turn the 8520 into 3g?

I have a better suggestion, sell your 8520 if possible and put it towards a 9700.

Um, thats not a trade up. Not to mention you are going to kick yourself for going a. to Sprint and b. to a CDMA carrier....
