No, an unlocked Tour (or any non-tmo 3G phone) won't work with tmo's 3G. It won't support the appropriate bands for it.

I say if you're in a city, you'll probably have tmo 3G and yes, it's a good network.

I think TMO's 3G is just great. I get awesome coverage and great speeds. I am using a 9700.

I'm not an expert at this by any means - but if you get an unlocked Tour (or other model), you may be able to find an OS upgrade (probably from an overseas carrier) that has the right bands. That's not to say the phone is capable of using those bands. Someone else would be better qualified to answer as to whether that's an option for you.

Its the phones Radio that has the band wired into it....tmo uses AWS 3G which isnt really used here they are the only ones using it....so to use tmo 3G you need a tmo branded 3g phone or Wind Wirless in Canada.....lol

The 3G bands that a phone can use depends on the actual hardware, not the OS or whatnot.

T-Mo's 3G bands are just sort of uncommon and so really the only phones you'd find that can use its 3G are its own phones, like the T-Mo branded 9700,

This is incorrect. It's a matter of hardware, not software. If the phone doens't have the nardware to run on a certain frequency, software cannot add it

Thanks for the correction. I've seen a lot of talk in the OS threads asking which 3G bands were supported. So it wasn't clear whether it was hardware or software. I guess I've gotten lucky with my OS upgrades.

all of you guys are wrong on the hardware not supporting other's 3G signal. (BGR Breaks It Down: Why a BlackBerry’s 3G bands are no longer relevant « Boy Genius Report)

The correct answer is simple The Tour uses a CDMA phone. CDMA (phones that do not require SIM cards) radio use EVDO style radio signals, and GSM Phones (any phone that uses a SIM card) use a different radios that use HSPA. So no you cannot get a Tour to work on due to radio differences. but only because the "style" of radio they are using.... frequency has nothing to do with it.

BUT any HSPA phone can be used on any HSPA network regardless of the frequency... it's just going to take some time for someone to crack the codes... but all the hardware is 100% the same.

It's an interesting article but I am not so sure. There are some comments that are crying out "BS".

Basically, I think I am going to remain skeptical until I see someone actually cracking this. It seems very VERY difficult to me.

It may happen but I will not hold my breath. True, lots of things like encryption are broken but that's because a lot of people are pirating things. However, I don't see cracking this bands as really helping a lot of people, and thus, creating that demand. Most people just have one carrier, stick with it, and get discounts off of phones that way.

BGR is totally incorrect. It's been cited time and again they were talking from their hip, with no way to back up their statement.

Frequency has everything to do with it.

If it were as "simple" as reflashing the software controlling the radio, then there would already be guys with Storm 9530s or Tour 9630s running on T-Mobile's 1700MHz 3G and AT&Ts 850/1900MHz 3G as well.

There would Storm 9500s and 9520s already "jail-breaked".

There are indeed different components. It is hardware dependent.

To the OP, your unlocked Tour would pick up EDGE only in the US. 3G/HSPA overseas at 2100MHz. If it were my call, and I were on T-Mobile, I'd pick up a 9700 without a second guess. T-Mo's 3G coverage isn't as "vast" but it's on an uncluttered 1700MHz freq which is not suffering the congestion of AT&Ts network.

If I'm not mistaken, WIND uses the same frequency as T-Mobile.

Default T-Mobile 3G and AT&T 3G

After reading the posts here i did some checking and found this from both websites not sure so here we go.

AT&T
Wireless Technology
GSM/GPRS
1900/850/900/1800 MHz
3G
UMTS: 2100/1900/850/800 MHz
BlackBerry® Bold (TM) 9700 Cell Phone - Wireless from AT&T

T-Mobile
850 MHz;900 MHz;1800 MHz;1900 MHz
3G
1700/2100
Unsupported Browser

So it would seem that both run on the 2100 Mhz frequency and you could switch between both networks when roaming for 3G. Can someone clear this up ?

2100MHz is a non-North American 3G band (Europe, Asia etc.).

T-Mobile carries their 3G HSPA/HSPA+ on 1700MHz.

AT&T carries their 3G HSPA on 8x0/1900MHz, depending on market.

900/1800MHz are non-North American incumbent bands (Europe, Asia etc, counterpart to American 800/1900).
