Default Data plan or Unlimited family text

Hey, just had a question. Back when I got my 8900 in September, I was told the data plan was mandatory in order to get the discount. Now I am reading it is a data plan OR an unlimited text package. At the time, I had an unlimited text package. Does that mean that my data plan could have been avoided? Thanks.

This is what is confusing me. Please read post 82 here: Changes afoot at T-Mobile; smartphones to require data plans, family messaging rate hike « Boy Genius Report

or Petey07's post here:
T-Mobile Blackberry 8900 $199AR Available now YMMV [Archive] - SlickDeals.net Forums

Or the last line of the first post here:
T-Mobile Dash 3G for $49 for New Customer

Did something change in the last couple of months that required it to be only unlimited data and unlimited text would not count?

No, smart phones with a data package requirement should have a data plan on them. A text messaging plan cannot be used to get around that requirement.

I was told by TMO customer service I could get the $14.99 unlimited text and it would qualify me instead of the DATA plan. That's what i did on one of my lines with a new 8900 and that was that. It works fine and i get charged $14.99 monthly extra and no problems.

I was also offered this option again just last week when I looked into upgrading one of my dumbphones to a smartphone . I believe the rule of thumb is the ONE phone must have the single line rate messaging plan of $14.99. I don't believe you can use a family messaging plan

Ok here is the final answer from two T-mobile reps. An INDIVIDUAL UNLIMITED TEXT MESSAGING for $14.99 CAN be used instead of an unlimited data requirement. Since I was on a family unlimited text it would not qualify me. For future searchers, there is your answer.
