Android is the name of the software, just like we have BlackBerry OS 6, and now BlackBerry OS 7, or iOS 5, or Windows Phone 7, and soon to be released Windows Phone 7.5, or webOS (Palm/HP) that runs on Pre 3 and Veer.
Droid is just a brand name that Verizon uses for some of their Android phones.
For example, Samsung Nexus S, HTC Sensation, Motorola Droid, Motorola Atrix, HTC Evo 3D, Samsung Infuse, Droid Incredible, Motorola Photon, are all phones that are manufactured by different companies, but they all run same software called Android.
Verizon decides to call some of these better phones Droids. And because Verizon is so big and has a lot of customers, people often hear "I have a Droid," and they assume that there is only one phone called Droid.
