Default App World working without data plan

It used to be that you absolutely needed a data plan (BIS/BES) for BlackBerry App World to work. I think I saw an item somewhere that claimed the latest version of App World would work over wifi without a data plan. The funny part is that it can apparently work without either.

T-Mobile lets you turn a data plan service on or off, and the monthly bill would contain the prorated charge accordingly. Admittedly, this means my Curve 8900 would contain service books that a data-less BB normally would not. Recently, I had turned off my data plan. I was busy fooling around with App World 1.1.0.33 (not the latest version) when I realized that I had been using it all this time with the wifi turned off. It had been running off the EDGE network all along. And it works fine.

Anyone else noticed this?

I think it works because you have the service books from when you had a data plan.

Gotta agree with you 100% Artemis. If you delete your service books or update your OS, you will lose this ability to access App World.

If it's a service book issue then that's not a problem. I can restore the service books from a previous backup with Desktop Manager, or just turn the data plan back on for a day.

As long as you save those previous SBs, then I guess you should be fine. I think it would be a pain reloading them each time you'd need to reload the SB but if you feel it's worth it to save $$ on a data plan, I say go for it.
