so will tmo be exchanging the 9700 for the 9780 if you 9700 dies on me? kinda like verizon did with the tour when the bold came out on their network?

Take note that there will be a LOT less people having issues with returning the device. Most of the returns that got a free upgrade were from stores that were out of stock.

No, because the Tour had a recognized issue with the trackball. That was a large reason behind the upgrades being given out

What happens to warranty exchanges and insurance replacements if I have a 9700? Are there any of them lying around still?

Warranty and insurance stock is always delayed a bit. This means that when a new device launches, they don't have refurbished or warranty replacement units right away. As a result, they have replacement units available for a certain amount of time after a model is discontinued. For example, TMO still has 8900s in stock for replacement, even though the stores haven't carried them for ~4 months.
