It is about time, but I have already had every leaked o/s available for the 8900 on my phone at some point since 4.6.X.X and 5.0.0.822 seems to be the first one that is flawless, so it was a great pick.
AT&T made this one official today for the Bold 9000.
Thanks for the heads up.

Better late than never... I'm running .681 from Vodafone UK and it's been good too.
Thanks for the news.

Nice, although it's hard to get excited about that now. I've had something like 21 different OS versions on my 8900 since getting it about a year and a half ago, and I've had 822 on it for a few weeks. Nice that 822 will be official (good release -- very solid), and considering that the device is officially "obsolete", I'm guessing this may be one of the last releases we see for the 8900. So at least my OS will be "official" while I wait and watch to see which device eventually replaces my 8900 (maybe "project emerald" if it pans out well).

Hard to get excited about this when our devices are EOL'ed. I have been running leaks and other carriers officials for the last 9 months. While the leak of .822 for the 8520 has been solid, the one official released so far has been a buggy mess. Will have to see how TMO handles this.

I would believe that the Curve 9300(3G +N wifi) would be the upgrade/replacement...most of the stuff is the same..although lower res screen and lower res camera, which is ridiculous in itself...steps backwards are almost never good....screenwise and camerawise...I don't see why they would do that.

Especially when you compare this to the increasing capabilities of other devices in the marketplace I cannot begin to think of this as a successor to my 8900. Only step up would be 3G, and I'm already thinking about HSPA+. I can't imagine spending a couple of hundred dollars, locking myself in for 2 years, and getting technology that's already behind the curve. If I didn't care about data speeds that might be fine -- 3G will certainly handle most data needs that aren't "real time" and it's fine for email and WAP pages, and in some cases a lot more. But I'm seeing increasingly potential use for mobile broadband, and at least want the potential to use it over the next couple of years.
If / when I move off the 8900, I'll be looking for 3G / HSPA+, would LOVE to have UMA (that's been SO useful for me), very possibly a move to Android (think I'll want to try OS6 vs Android for a while to really get a feel for this). As of today, the benefits of BB for me are the keyboard and instant push services. Having played with Swype and landscape touch screen keyboards, the physical keyboard may be less of an issue than I ever thought. With better bandwidth and services like GMail, BIS / push becomes much less of a consideration as well. If these two disappear as differentiators, then the "need" to stay blackberry will largely disappear for me, too. If I were provisioning 10,000 employees I'd stick with Blackberry for now -- but for a group of 6 to 10, and for personal use, the case is less clear now than ever...

This is very easy for me to get excited about it as apparently I'm the only T-Mobile 8900 user not to use any leaks. :-). Thanks for the news. After waiting a year now just one more week.

Just wondering how an official OS, from RIM, but put out by another carrier is a leak? You have been missing out for a year.

Adding to WackoStu's comment... 822 has been official (via RIM and Hutchison), and T-Mobile Blackberry support is incredibly easy with regard to OS versions -- I've had them on the phone several times over the past few years, and I've always been up front with them about the various OS versions I've had loaded onto my Blackberry's -- official, non-T-Mobile release, leaks, etc -- and they've never tried to make that an issue. Only thing they might do, if you're on an older OS and haven't yet upgraded to the last T-Mobile supported version, is ask you to try upgrading to that latest version to rule out OS bugs in your old version that hadn't yet been resolved back then when it was released.
In short - you're really not at risk, and if you like having the fastest, best performing, and least buggy firmware on your device, you might consider not always waiting for T-Mobile's officially blessed version.
