Default 3G one day Edge the next??

I don't understand why on any given day, in the same location, I could have solid 3G service and then the next day or hour later it could be EDGE. Help.

Thanks.

You may be having local tower problems. Also, what about indoors? You may have strong 3G outside but move indoors and it can go back to EDGE.

How long have you had T-Mobile? I'm noticing the same but it's likely due to HSPA+ upgrades.

I went to EDGE where I always had 3G in the past at my office for 2 days. Found out they were upgrading the towers in our area and am now locked back into 3G. May be the same thing going on around you

I can have 70-80 dBm or better and see either 3G or EDGE. It just seems like Tmobile decides when 3G will be operational.

Had the same problem a few weeks ago and found out it was due to upgrades to the cell towers. I called about 10 times in those few days and no one could give me any answers. I took a ride to the area where most of the big cell towers are in my area, sure as heck there were a bunch of trucks working on the towers. Nothing but solid 5 bars of 3G service now. Wait a couple of days and see if it gets better.

It doesn't work like that. As others have mentioned 3G is being taken offline for network-related stuff.... not because they don't want you on the 3G network.

People are seeing this in other places, including me. But it's more pathetic in some areas. It would be nice if they would just send a text to people with 3G service phones and let them know that upgrades are being performed. But hey who said T-Mobile management was smart.

It would be nice if T-Mobile gave out milk and cookies too but it's not going to happen anytime soon.

Well for one 2G and 3G is completely separate equipment at a cell site. If the T1 going to the 3G site is broke or having issues, the 3G cabinet will be brought offline and you will default back to 2G. Until the telco company repairs the said T1 in the field or their central office you may not have service. Higher populated areas have more that one T-1 to a cell site. So that being said you wouldn't lose the site, just lose capacity. Most people dont realize that the call is really only a wireless call from the handset to the tower. once it hits the tower it rides wires (either copper or fiber) across the country to whomever you are calling.

As for getting the T-1 fixed sadly its not all cut and dry. Sometimes there are access issues to buildings where techs can get in at certain hours. Sometimes the telco company has large outages themselves and sometimes the telco company just plain refuses to go out. 9 out of 10 issues were you have signal one day and nothing the next is actually related to the T-1 and the telco company.
