how important is 3g?
after like 18 months, the camera on my curve 8300 stopped working

so i'm in the market for a new cell cuz im one of those ppl who actually uses their camera regularly....
the at&t sales rep told me i could get the bold with all the best features or wait a few months for the new curve which would have wifi but no 3g..so how important is it to have 3g? i live in philly and im not really sure how big a market it is for 3g....i use my internet a lot so im not sure how big a difference that makes but i'd just like to know will having 3g be so much better than regular edge
thanks - 02-27-2009, 10:40 AM #2
If you live in a good 3G area, the value is huge. I have the Bold in a good 3G area and cannot imagine using a BB or any phone without it anymore.

Go for the 3G, there is a big difference. Philly is covered. Also consider that you've used your phone for 18 months, I am assuming you'll do the same with this one. 3G will get even faster, edge will not, at least not thru AT&T.

Once you've experienced 3G, you can't go back....Edge and 1X are so slow its not even worth using internet.

I find the real advantage of 3g is not the speed but the ability to do many things at once when in a 3g coverage area.
Downloading email and messages while talking on the phone is really nice and the ability to talk on the Bold while web browsing or instant messaging is great too.
I do not find that the 3g network is that much faster when compared to Edge but the ability to do more at once is good. - 02-27-2009, 02:33 PM #6
With 3G you can talk and surf at the same time. It also eliminates the annoying GSM buzz you get in speakers and office phones.

The Pros for me is 3G has better call quality/clarity. Also data and voice simultaneously is a benefit. The cons 2G to 3G handoffs, battery life, and coverage compared to the 2G network.

Another advantage of 3g is how fast apps that use data are... For example... try and go on the Facebook/MySpace and load up pictures. It's dreadful on anything less than 3g IMO. Of course this was my experience with my iPhone 2g and 3g, but I'm sure its the same with a Curve (edge) and Bold (3g).

3G
I would die if I didn't have 3G well kinda of anyways. Everything works so much faster, moving at the speed of sound someone once said. LOL just kidding but everything operates much faster than EDGE.

I too get much better call quality and very fast browsing with 3G. It's a big difference.

3G isn't really important to me. I'll gladly replace my BOLD with an 8900.

well the Curve2 uses edge 2.5
So its much faster than edge, but I believe you do not gain the ability to use voice and data. - 03-02-2009, 04:24 PM #14

Depends on what you use your phone for. If you want to browse the internet at all then you really need 3g, but I use my iphone for that so my 8900 works out fine for me.

I had 3g on my LG CU500 and I really wasn't that impressed, given it was new then... edge works just fine for me, it's not all that slow.

i have to agree it depends what you use it for. if all you do is email/text/IM you wont notice much of a difference. youll lose simultaneous voice/data that 3g offers.
If you do web browsing or other data heavy things 3g will make a difference.
Its really depends what you need it for. Personally I wouldnt give up 3g for anything. i havent had a 2g phone for about 2-3 years now coming from CDMA with evdo
