    Default ATT and Hidden BS

Hello, I am currently a Sprint user. I am considering moving to ATT at the time of the Z10 release. I have investigated pricing, coverage, etc. I was wondering what kind of taxes and hidden fees I can expect. I would also like to know if there are any hidden fees for services like GPS, wifi hotspot, etc. I asked at a retail store and they told me everything is included in the share plan. I also read in an article that ATT carries alot of Bloatware on their devices and will limit use and availability of competitive apps, forcing users to utilize att services only. Any other issues I can expect moving from Sprint Unlimited to Att Family share, please advise.

I've thought about this too. The brochure makes it seem like gps is extra.

Here's the sparknotes....you get charged for everything. I'm not sure about other networks, but literally everything they can nickel and dime. The customer service and coverage is bar-none the best though. Simply better. I have friends and family on all other networks and have better reception than all of them (comparing only people with smartphones of course). They do an excellent job of warning you of overages and such as well. They pre-load a bunch of BS you can only hide, but I think it's true for every carrier. Overall, even though it can get $$$ quick, well worth it. It really is picking the lesser of all evils, though, to be totally honest.

if you use their gps app it is extra so I don't use it.

hot spot is extra - although I don't have a share plan either so I'm not sure if it is covered on there or not but I doubt it.

Is GPS limited. Do they block apps that utilize GPS?

Free? Really? When I launched it when I first got my 9800, it said it was free for the first 30 days, then $9.99/mo after that, so I clicked "No" and hid the damn thing with the other bloatware you cannot uninstall.

At least AT&T unlocked BB Maps about a year ago, or so. So, they haven't really blocked anything. Well, other than Bridge - which you'd have to have a PlayBook to go with it in the first place.

Even when AT&T was blocking BB Maps, you could easily get Google Maps.

And I've never been charged for GPS.

I don't know how they could detect/charge you from using GPS that's built into the phone if they don't control the app using GPS.

So I went to a second ATT store to see if I would get conflicting information. One of the things the sales clerk mentioned was I could expect to pay 35 to 50 dollars more, On top of the contract price for taxes and fees. That seems high compared to the taxes and fees I pay with Sprint. I pay $18 in taxes and surcharges with Sprint. When I asked why so high he said that's the Government and ATT also charges a tower fee??? Anybody have a ball park of taxes fees and surcharges with ATT. Also worth noting that the first ATT store I went to told me there was no discount for the company I work for, but the second store said there was.

The extra fees may vary depending on your location. I'm near Seattle, WA and have FamilyTalk Nation 550 w/ Rollover for 2 phones (BlackBerry and Android). Looking at my bill, each phone has these extra fees (I don't know why the fees are higher on Phone #1):

    Surcharges and Other Fees
    • City Utility Users Surcharge
    • Federal Universal Service Charge
    • Regulatory Cost Recovery Charge

    Government Fees and Taxes
    • County 911 Service Fee
    • City District Sales Tax - Telecom
    • City Sales Tax - Telecom
    • State 911 Fee
    • WA State Sales Tax - Telecom

    Phone 1: $10.56
    Phone 2: $ 4.54
    ===========================
    TOTAL: $15.10

    Hope this helps.

That's BS. All stores should have a central database or list of which companies get a discount. Your company's HR/Benefits Dept should know, too.

I know AT&T gives Boeing employees 25-percent, and the Bellevue School District 15-percent.

Store #1 has an ***** working there. If you plan on doing business there, talk to the manager.

My taxes are less than 10% total. Gps isn't charged for. If you subscribe to a navigator you'll have to pay for it . The share plan includes mobile hotspot.I was with Sprint for 4 years and I can tell you call quality and coverage is so much better. And sprint data is pitiful against att 3g much less hspa+ or Lte. On Sprint I averaged 60-70 KB on att its 400-600 KB without touching 4g . Jump on Att and you won't go back to Sprint.

I have a family plan, my blackberry is the main line with unlimited data ($30, grandfathered in) and a 200 txt plan/mo ($5)

The other 3 phones on my plan are just basic phones as my older parents don't like technology. I can't use hot spot unless I pay extra for it. I never get charged for using google maps or blackberry traffic. I get the bridge app from rroyy.com and never get charged for it.

Monthly Charges - Jan 27 thru Feb 26
    1. FamilyTalk Nation 700 with Rollover 60.00
    2. International Roaming - Expanded 0.00
    3. VISUAL VOICEMAIL 0.00
    4. BBRY PERSONAL 30.00
    5. Messaging 200 5.00
    Total Monthly Charges 95.00
Here's the extras on just my phone:

    Surcharges and Other Fees
    6. Federal Universal Service Charge 2.96
    7. Regulatory Cost Recovery Charge 0.52
    8. State Gross Receipts Surcharge 3.59
Total Surcharges and Other Fees 7.07
    Government Fees and Taxes
    9. 911 Service Fee 1.00
    10. PA State Sales Tax - Telecom 4.31
Total Government Fees and Taxes 5.31
Total Other Charges & Credits 12.38
Here's the charges for every other phone on my plan:

    Surcharges and Other Fees
    4. Federal Universal Service Charge 0.52
    5. Regulatory Cost Recovery Charge 0.52
    6. State Gross Receipts Surcharge 0.58
Total Surcharges and Other Fees 1.62
    Government Fees and Taxes
    7. 911 Service Fee 1.00
    8. PA State Sales Tax - Telecom 0.69
Total Government Fees and Taxes 1.69
Total Other Charges & Credits 3.31
My final total is around $147/mo

Hotspot is included in the Mobile Share plans, not the Nation and Family plans. Those require a $50/5GB data plan to get hotspot.
