Default AT&T prepping to EOL a few BlackBerry devices -BUT...

As you read, there are some devices running out the next months...

The Blackberry 8520 (Curve) will end on April 13th,
The BlackBerry 8900 (Curve) on April 16th,
and the "Cadillac" Blackberry 9000 (Bold) on May 13th;

Thatīs kinda sad, because some devices are already great classics!!

BUT!!!

Donīt you think that could be the start for some new (refresh)devices?

Like the long rumored/waited Blackberry 9900 (Magnum/Dakota/Monaco)?
A new version of the Blackberry 9000 - with OS6, 5Mpx., 512MB memory and TOUCHSCREEN?!

Or the a new Blackberry 8980 (Curve) in a bold 9700 case?

Or something totally unexpected different?

I mean, we read the past few weeks/months (felt like years), that we will see some more refreshes till duo-cores are good and cheap enough for RIM to put them into smartphones to start into a new era of BB...

I also think May could be a realistic time to get new phones.
Maybe in Feb. announced - May for sale

I donīt have any proofs or something like that...
That are just my thoughts.

What do you think to that???

or, they could be phasing out non-3G devices, and the Bold 9000 is old hardware.

I agree. Consumers won't buy non 3G phones here in the US.

RIM basically threw the white flag. Only option on ATT is the torch and curve. They will try to survive off those handsets till QNX releases next year. Poor torch owners who supported blackberry and blackberry 6. RIM just basically sh***** on the loyal customers.

EOL? White flag?
Discontinuing a product is nothing new. They are just trimming the fat. Why would you sell something if the replacement parts are no longer being made for it?

I think they offer too many devices to be honest. Their product line going forward should consist of a Pearl, Bold, Torch and a new Storm (without the click) and even that is pushing it with 4 different models.

They could get away with just a Storm form factor and a Torch. The Torch is 'small' enough to replace the Pearl and the keyboard is good enough to forget the 9000/97xx style phones. Yes, the 9000 had the best keyboard, but I have moved on and I have big hands, lol.

Honestly..I don't think we'll be seeing anything out of RIM for the next 6 months. Look back at 2010..all they released despite all the rumoured devices was the Torch and the Style.

The 'ol Rumoured Devices section is looking pretty thin over there right now..and I really don't think your gonna be "Wow'ing" too many people with a "9900" with 512MB and OS6. That form factor's already been done with the Droid Pro with better specs.

Your forgetting about the recently released Style as well..

I disagree. Their would be he-l-l to pay from RIM fans if they ditched the solid form fitting QWERTY like the Bold. That keyboard is the ONLY reason alot of people use BB's to begin with. Yes..I know the Torch has the physical keyboard..and while I never had any issues with it..alot of people hate it.

RIM should Always keep the following formfactors:
Full keyboard non-touch
full touch non-keyboard
full keyboard full touch
SureType

After that, it would be nice if they kept a decent flip and brought out a touchscreen Bold

True. I forgot about the flip phone form factor, yet I am aware that there are a lot of people who like that form factor. This is where RIM loses because you might have someone who just want's a flip phone for texting but when they are told they have to get a data plan, etc. they are like "wtf, i'll just get that Nokia (or whatever) over there instead."

RE: the Storm
I still can't understand why the feedback from the click is so important to some people, though, i've never used a Storm before, so I wouldn't know.

It's as if RIM's model of catering to all users is a strengh, yet it is also a weakness. They have a device for most types of customer but then they have a product line that spreads their resources too thin.

You also forgot their best selling line, the curve. In my opinion, they should have the curve, bold, torch, and storm lines. The pearl and style are nice but not necessary, again my opinion and I'm sure those users disagree. I agree they have too many phones and I'm sure that contributes to having fewer apps.

I read a similar thread in the general discussion

Why two of them? I still have my 9700 and nobody is taking it off me.

I donīt think thats that impossible, that we gonna see the 9900 (if they call it so)...

We read, that RIM will bring 3 refreshes till new generation of BB.

First happend: 9700 ----> 9780
Second happend: 8520 ----> 9300

and

why not: 9000 ----> 9900??

I mean the 9000 was a bestseller till the specs went from old - to superold.
And it still would be one with, at least: OS6, enough memory, Trackpad.
The screen size is a lot better than the one from to 9700 (esp. for webbrowsing).

Discontinuing with nothing new being released. I agree with the White Flag theory. RIM is no longer in the game in NA.

I agree. Seeing no announcements at CES was a huge disappointment, I wanted something to salivate over.
Oh well....I'll wait for the new series of QNX phones. I have in my drawer one 8310, one 9000, one 9700, one 9300 and one Torch. I will get the 9780 when it comes out.
Looking forward I'll look towards the mythical Dell Lightning which I think will never be released and to the iPhone 5. If they give me true multitasking I will be willing to forego being able to replace my own battery *if* the battery is as improved as it's been reported.
Very disappointed with CES and the lack of BBerries being announced.

However, this much I know....the more I see it, play with it, and the more I hear people talk it up, the more sure I am that I detest Android. If BBerries fall off the face of the planet I'll go iPhone/WM7, but now way in h3ll will I ever become an Android user.
