Default t-mobile 9700 on at&t

i bought a bold 9700 on ebay, it's t-mobile branded. i have at&t, with a samsung captivate.

i understand i can't get 3G, but that's fine. but i can only get edge (not EDGE), and BBM and e-mail don't work, neither does voicemail. the browser works, and phones calls, sms/mms work fine. i tried just about every guide/how-to i can but it will not register.

my host routing table is *empty*. i tried to register on at&t BIS page but it said the device is not registered to at&t. i tried to register the 9700 through the host routing table screen too, many times. i've factory reset it many times.

what do i have to do? did i buy a stolen phone? am i screwed?

Have you tried calling AT&T and having them switch your Android data plan to a BIS plan?

i read at&t no longer has specific plans for smartphones, just the 200MB, 2GB, tethering, etc. plans.

so there is still a "blackberry" plan that is needed?

nope you have to call to get BIS, its still a smartphone plan but a specific one detailed especially for the blackberry. Otherwise you won't get that functionality. you can then swap to your captivate whenever you want as it doesnt affect it in the same way.

The cost of the BIS plan should be the same as what you already have for your Android.

Yes, it is possible to use the Android with the BIS plan, just not the other way around.

i spoke with at&t this morning, told them i what i wanted, and they 'activated' the phone on my number. all they asked for from me was the IMEI, which i gave them.

how long until the change is effective? do i need to reboot? i'll probably pull the battery and let it sit a few minutes after work today.

If BIS was properly provisioned that change should be instant. Battery pulls are always advisable for any change, however in my use I've never had to do a battery pull to grab the BIS, but try it none the less.

I think it takes something like 24 hours.
