I think you have to call AT&T to have them release the PIN of your 9000 from the BIS. This has always been the case and nothing new.
There are always posts from people buying used and even unlocked BBs, but are not able to register them on their carrier's BIS because the previous owner didn't call their carrier first to release the phone's PIN from the old BIS.
You could always switch from one BB to another when you log in with the other BB. I've done it switching from my old Pearl 8100 to my wife's 8100 for temporary use (using my SIM card in it), and then to my current Torch (with a new SIM card but using my same number and activating it first). I don't know if this automatically releases the old PINs from the BIS, though. I still have both old Pearls, but neither have active SIM cards.
