Thumbs down No more early upgrades from AT&T?

I'm trying to do an early upgrade to the Blackberry Torch AT&T keeps telling me that they do no do early upgrades for Blackberries. I don't see anything on engadgetmobile.com or anything like that. Is this true?

How dare they make you wait the term of your contract obligation before getting a new discounted phone.

How early are you to upgrade? For the amount that their early upgrade fee costs its almost as much as buying the non commitment price!

Really, the only time they'll do an early upgrade on a smartphone is if you're upgrading to an iPhone from something else.

My contract is up in May, and I've been eligible (as shown when logged in on their website) for an upgrade since early December. Was the same situation when I last upgraded.. always seems to be around the 1 1/2 years of a 2-year contract that you can upgrade.

Unfortunately, its not quite that simple. There's a number of factors that affect your upgrade. Those factors include the amount of your monthly bill before taxes and fees, the length of your history with ATT, your history of on-time bill payments, and whether or not you're a business customer/have a business discount on your line.

The rough upgrade points are $70 and $100. Pay less than $70, you have to wait 21 months. Between $70 and $100, and it's 18 months, usually. More than $100 tends to be every 12 months.

It's your average monthly charges for voice, possibly data and/or messaging, over the past three bills that make the current determination. Every time you downgrade your services, your upgrade date has a good chance of being pushed back.

Additionally, the more you pay without getting credits or adjustments, the more likely you can get certain things that requires minor rule-bending. If you're constantly having customer care credit usage charges, and getting upgrade fees, service restoration fees, number change fees, and activation fees adjusted, you're going to the back of the line on a bullet train.

No one's allowed to modify iPhone prices or credit for MicroCells, so don't ask.

We have a 5 line family acct with a data card as well, and data plans on 3 phones, with a FAN discount. Our main line gets an upgrade every 12 months. The rest are every 18

its also got to be at least 6 months since your previous upgrade/activation to qualify for an early upgrade.
and whoever told you that they won't early upgrade to a smartphone is incorrect. Its actually quite common.

I have been an AT&T user since '97 and they seem to treat me good. It has been harder to stay loyal with them due to the way they cripple their devices, load crapware and delay on timely firmware releases. My 9700 seems to be a good fix for now, my upgrade says 4/20 '11 on their site does that mean an early update with contingencies or the real 2 year mark I forgot which month I actually upgraded last. I usually keep my same plan I still have a Family plan with unlimited data, and rollover minutes. don't wanna give this up. I think keeping my 9700 until it is absolutely necessary will be beneficial for me, maybe an HSPA+ BB on QNX. I think my 9700 will last that long, 2012? LoL

The top of every BB's forum has detailed instructions on how to install the latest OS version. How is that an issue with AT&T when you know that this site even exists? Android and WinMo sites do similar things.

Do you not just walk up to the counter at McRestaurant's instead of navigating the pathway when nobody is in line?

I've been able to upgrade after 20? months the last couple of times I've gotten a new device. I was with Houston Cellular, which became Cingular, which became AT&T, though. Its been about 12 years now.

Youre talking to the wrong people. Go to a store, the rep has to call credit and activations. Qualifications, line in question in contract for more than six months. No suspensions for the past 12 months. It's a done deal if both those things are met.

I get an upgrade every 12 months. I dunno why, but I do drop a lot of money each month.
