I have a secondary phone, which is a European 9700 (unlocked by default when purchased with swisscom) which runs on the same frequency bands as AT&T. I am roaming with it, and the coverage is excellent, even better than with verizon.
So, for those of you who have done something similar before... Is it worth it or not?
-snip- | I was with Verizon for years and about six months ago I tried AT&T because I wanted a Torch (I like the large screen plus the physical keyboard). For MY purposes, the coverage was actually better since with Verizon I can get no signal in my office @25th & Lexington in NYC (e.g. VMs can take hours to be delivered to my phone). With AT&T no problem, and the rest of the coverage was fine. The thing that turned me off (and made me go back to VZW) was, unfortunately, the customer service. First, I signed up @Premier through my School and the discounts shown on the site were NOT the discounts I got when my first bill came; when I called up and asked why the site showed I would get a bigger discount than I actually received I was given some BS about the site not having access to the actual discounts. You know, it's not us, it's you. Then when I tried to cancel during my trial period (well within 30 days) a CS rep actually lied to me and said I would be charged full price for the phone regardless of whether I canceled during the first 30 days or not. Honest to you-know-who, I am NOT exaggerating. To be fair, I'm sure there are honest CSRs at AT&T, in fact I got one later who was thoroughly efficient in putting through the cancel request. And your experience might be completely different than mine and like so many others who swear by AT&T. It's just that you need to be aware these things can happen. Frankly, now that my 6 month period is about to expire and me and wifey are out-of-contract with VZW I'm getting the itch for that Torch again (Verizon has nothing like it). But I'm not sure I want to go down that same road.
Good Luck.
