Default I have a slightly dumb question...

but I am going to ask anyways! lol. =)

So I have two lines, one line is with an iphone, and the other is a blackberry...
the blackberry I have had for years so it is grandfathered in, so I don't pay for data. The iphone, I obviously pay $15 data a month...

Now the person who uses the iphone doesn't really use the data, so it is just a kind of a waste...I wanted to see if the data plan could be switched to the blackberry...that way at least someone gets some use out of the data plan...is it that possible?

thanks and I am going to apologize in advance if this may sound stupid..ahaha.

I bought a very basic flip off of eBay and put the sim card from my old 3GS in there and then called at&t to give them the IMEI and saved the $15 per month. My best guess is as long as you have a smartphone you have to have a data plan on it. I could be wrong as I'm fairly new with AT&T but maybe some other members will chime in here.

iPhone, along with other smartphones, require the data plan. You cannot just drop it off the iPhone, unless you drop the iPhone off the line, and use a phone that does not require a data plan.

You can add a small data plan on the BlackBerry line, like the 200mb/$15 BlackBerry data plan that is available.

not sure I understand what you mean by not paying for data on the blackberry, but I will take your word for it. I would imagine trying to swap plans thru AT&T will certainly affect your bill (might end up paying for 2 data plans) - have you considered not switching plans, but switching phones instead? Let the blackberry user use the iPhone and visa versa - it will be transparant to AT&T.

Nope. Activating a different smartphone on the line unless it is a warranty or insurance replacement will revoke your exemption.

Yes, no need to change your plan if you are already getting data on your BB. Don't worry about the other user's data plan.

Actually u don't have to have a smart phone plan. My dad got me this torch with his upgrade. He was using a razor lol. He went to walmart and got it for 97 cents. Got the data plan. Went to the at&t store in town, told them he will be using the razor. Then told them drop the data plan and block the net. Now his sim card is in my old iphone with no data. He has no net connection unless on wifi but isn't charged. This doesn't really answer the origanal question but I seen some said u had to have a plan...

Yea back when AT&T carried 8310's it did not require a data plan and if you still have the phone, the company put a smartphone exclusion or something deal so you will not be automatically added to a data plan.

From what i know is that it doesn't matter if you switch IMEI to a "razr" per say and put the SIM in a "torch" you will eventually pay the data plan

To answer your question the soon as the iPhone goes to the # that has a Blackberry it will require you to have a data plan and vice versa...b/c the iPhone line is not "grandfather" into no data for smart phone

AT&T does checks on accounts, and if they see you own a smartphone without a data plan, they add a data plan automatically.
& Yes they can do this. Read the carrier service terms, they can add or change your service to meet the terms set forth in the carrier service agreement that you agreed to when you signed for cell phone service.

Anyone who had a smartphone in late 2009 got a smartphone exemption feature, even if they had unlimited data already. This allowed you to block data if you wanted, but upgrading or activating any other phone aside from the situations I mentioned earlier would result in its removal.

In most cases.
