Default att Automatically Added Data Pack

I gave my old 9700 to my friend on att who doesn't have data plan--to use as a regular phone without data.

After couple hours he gets a message saying BIS is now registered and BAM! a 2GB data plan added to his account on OLAM.

They can do this to people? Automatically force data plans onto you if they detect smartphone?

Yes they can. It's well known.

This is pretty much with every carrier as the data plans are required. You'll either have to get a messaging phone or pay for the data plan.

They have been doing this for a long time now. If you don't sign up for one soon after activation you will be charged for one anyway. I am inclined to say if your not going to get one, get a different phone. Using a bb without one is very limiting and definately not worth it.

The policy was implemented in September 2009.

As noted, if your friend doesn't want a data plan, then a regular phone is what he needs to stick with.

You even get SMS notification of this, and it's not like you can't remove smartphone plans ONLINE or anything if you stop using a smartphone.
