Well I experimented with setting different video bit rates while encoding Empire Strikes Back....
- at 500 the quality is pretty good and I'd be pretty content with it if that was the highest setting that was allowed in Handbrake. (file size of 517MB)
- at 1000 the quality was amazing! (file size of 972MB)
- at 1500, which is what is defaulted to when I added the movie as the source file, the quality was also excellent! I went back and forth between 1000 and 1500 and I couldn't really tell any difference. Maybe different movies would give me a little more noticeable difference, but then maybe it wouldn't. (file size of 1.3GB)
So for my use I would recommend setting video bit rate to 1000. It's still a HUGE file but not as big as setting it to 1500. Plus the quality is absolutely stunning!
Oh and BTW, I converted these files to mp4's and they all worked just fine on my phone so not sure why others are having problems.
Hey Motifman, if I go to encode a widescreen movie, do I need to change any settings in Handbrake, or does it do it automatically?
Thanks again to Matt for posting this info as I wouldn't have known how to do it.
