Default What is RIM doing?

I have owned my Storm since January of '09. Well, technically this is my third Storm under the same VZW contract. I had high hopes for RIM's first BlackBerry with touchscreen. I was looking forward to a nice GUI and Storm touchscreen-specific applications. I was excited about the idea of a phone that harnesses the business-end of a BB while capturing a media-based consumer.

Fast-forward to February 2010 and I'm utterly disappointed with my Storm. I find the original BlackBerry features to work great on this device. BBM, Calendar, Email and the standard chat apps work flawlessly, most of the time. The voice recognition software is fantastic and you can't ask for better network security and firewall settings. However, that's where the positives seem to end.

Using this phone on a day-to-day for over a year has certainly made me aware that it is extremely limited. I believe RIM is completely out of touch with the average consumer. Their enterprise software and business apps are second to none, but when it comes to innovation and GUI they are last on the list.

It bothers me to see a steady stream of "new" phones being released by RIM. Almost on a monthly basis, we have a new BlackBerry to look at, with hardly any new software or hardware changes/upgrades. Once these new devices are released, watch the stream of developer content and RIM support for older devices slow to a trickle and then dry up within a short period of time. I do not like treating my phone like a disposable device, ready to shuck every few months.

With the earnings RIM posted for parts of last year, one might assume some of those millions of dollars would be going to improving end-user experience with their devices. Instead, Storm users, like myself are left with a gimmick phone with an out of date OS that was poorly imported into a touchscreen format.

I was not expecting to be blown-away by a first-gen device from BlackBerry, but I was expecting a lot more from the original Storm. I know RIM is starting to get their act together with the WebKit update and a possible real touchscreen GUI for OS 6.0, but once my VZW contract is up, I don't think I'm going to renew with a BlackBerry. As much as I love some of their software, their phones leave a lot to the imagination.

If a company like Palm can rise from the ashes and create an OS with a great GUI and a stable first-gen piece of hardware, then there is no excuse acceptable as to why the Storm experience has been so lackluster.

AND no I'm not going to buy an iPhone, but for the price I pay, I do deserve a device that is more of a smart phone and less of a poorly designed BB Curve with a touchscreen.

Out of all that, you only come up with Acid 3 browser comparison compared to the Palm Pre. LOL. Good luck hanging your hat on that.

I personally got it for the larger screen. Makes media viewing, attachment viewing/editing, mobile browser (which sucks, bigger screen just made it more suckier), that sort of stuff. Being able to hide the keyboard and have the whole device dedicated to viewing and navigating is convenient. But they should have written the OS from scratch to support the touch screen.

I agree with your last sentence, which is pretty much why I asked the question (rhetorically).

I have a Nokia with 640x360 resolution and it still doesn't work like a netbook. For now, I don't believe you can get a desktop browsing experience on any phone (at least one that's not a brick and starts to blur the line between netbooks and phones) so I just don't worry about it.

who in the world would buy Nokia 5800, and what would user who's browser is based on WAP 2.0, HTML, and RSS feeds, with a memory only reaching to 16 GB no about a real Mobile Browser anyway, maybe thats whats hot in Asia, but definetly not here in the United States.

You're right, iPhone users really don't know much about Mobile Browsers. How's that Flash browser going?

Oh right, HTML5 is the future, I forgot.

Right on, GZ. But just ignore Brandon, he's a hopeless iFanboi, his whole life is justifying his lack of e-manhood by trying to claim his iBrick is an "investment" (LOL) and bash anything his iDol didn't create

hahahaha good words of encouragement to the Storm 2 user, they need a pick you upper with a browser like theirs. and your right I'm an iFanboy, but why not its King of the smartphone world, and people hate it because it is, i mean look at your signature its all about your hatred for the iPhone although no one even knows what the Nokia 5800 is without googling it first

agreed LOL @ iPad, and LOL at anyone who owns a Storm and gives insight on the iPhone not putting flash on their device, well unless you had no choice but to buy the storm cause then its not fair to pick on you, pretty much my argument was aimed at Fonage for his browser comments not you, you just happened to jump in on the party. Your Storm is cool I just find it hard to see anyone make comments about my browser which is considered the best mobile browser in the business even by the owner of this site, by a forum member who owns a Blackberry device, which is by far the worst mobile browser in the business.
