Default Voice Dialing Awful

Prior to upgrading to 5.0 voice dialing worked fine. In fact prior to upgrading to 5.0 most things worked except the camera snap was slow. I would describe the Storm prior to 5 quirky but useable.

After upgrading the camera response time is noticeably faster, but apps that worked just fine now don't. 1 step forward and 5 back. More lockups, more unresponsive apps, but the thing that drives me crazy is the voice dialing.

Yes I have went through the voice adapt process... more than once even. What's so frustrating is the names it picks don't even seem close. For instance I will say Call Eldon and the Storm will reply Call Paul Bender?.

Anyone else have this problem?

That lady has never understood me. Must be my strange Southern/Midwest accent.

Yea its not very solid. My girlfriends name is Tara, and my ex's name is Sarah. I tried voice dialing my gf a few times and ended up calling my ex.

In case anyone was wondering; its not good to call your ex girlfriend and greet her with "hey baby". And it definitely doesn't help if your drunk.

VAD in 5.0.0.419 for the S1 is absolutely awesome - no complaints here in fact I have actually started using VAD for the first time after having a BB for years.

Try re-reading the first post. The 3rd paragraph specifically.

I agree - the new Voice Dialling is awful.

The previous voice dialling 'lady' was American but her accent wasn't too strong - and she actually understood what I was saying - since I connected to Desktop manager the other night it has obviously done an upgrade and now I have the new Voice Dialling 'lady' who, to an Englishman, has a VERY strong American accent and pronunciation.

I tried calling my son the other day and heard the new 'lady' ask me to 'say a command' so I said "call (son's name)" she couldn't even understand the word call in my English 'accent' I eventually got her to understand who I wanted to call but then she asked me for "which location?" ??? what happened to "which number?"
I then said "mobile" and again she had no idea what I was saying.
She eventually said "did you mean call (son's name) 'mobul' one" WHAT?????
No wonder she didn't understand me saying 'MOBILE' when she pronounces it 'MOBUL' and where did the neccesity to say 'ONE' come from - he's only got one mobile number and the old 'lady' never needed me to stipulate 'mobile one' especially when there is only one mobile entry for that contact??????

I wish I could go back to the old 'lady' - I didn't especially like her but at least she understood me and I could understand her!

I think there should be an option to set the whole device to English (UK) rather than just English (American) it would be so much easier for people in the UK to have an English 'voice' - nothing against american people but if Blackberry was made in Scotland and then sold in America and the Voice Dialling was only available with a Glaswegian males voice you guys across the pond would never make a single call via Voice Dialling!!!!

Maybe there is a solution (that's why I added this comment - to try and find a solution rather than just rant!) Is there a way to change the voice, download a UK voice or download a different Voice Dialling App - there must be something????????

Really, .419 solves the voice dialing issue plus many more. I was really frustrated when I updated to .328 because I use voice dialing all the time and it was horrible!

After upgrading to .419 I can hear the voice perfectly and am understood just fine.

Well, if yours work then it must be all of our faults, we all talk wrong. LOL

I've had probably 20 years of cell phone usage, Blackberry has the worst voice dialing/recognition software, for a device of this magnitude, there should be a much better technology. Blackberry works of "pronunciation" recognition, Mobiledevice, you and I know this is not logically, a lot of the pronunciation the Blackberry interprets is completely off hilter, I actually laugh sometimes when I hear the playback of the names.

I'll give you a good example, put BestBuy in your phone book and try to voice dial with that name, I can bet you won't hit it. I've even split it to Best Buy and also put Store at the end so it's unique, it's still a 50/50 hit and miss and my english is just fine, I hate to see anyone with an accent try. If you do hit it, listen to the Blackberry's playback, it sounds nothing like what you and I would pronounce it.

This is not a difficult feature, it's been around for ages. Why not give the user a choice to record their own voice dialing names like every other phone does, at least this way, we have a choice rather then just not using it because really, it does not work like voice dialing should.
