Default Storm - Enough is enough - this 9530 device sucks.

I have been a Blackberry user for five years. As a Systems Engineer, I convinced my admins NOT to abandon BB for Windows Mobile two years ago because the devices were the best phone for our business.

I did NOT worry about bogus BETA upgrades...ever. The 8830, Curve, old brick 9520's, it didn't matter. RIM did not try to make me feel special via 'beta' upgrades (e.g. free Beta testing), because they didn't need to.

The fact is, the Storm sucks. It sucks as a phone, it sucks as a mobile device, it sucks as a flashlight, it sucks as a paperweight. I bought my Storm in November, and I find that it is a constant worry. I upgraded to the most recent release (.109) and it sucks harder than it sucked before. I do not want to roll it back to a point in time when it sucked less than it sucks now.

Here is why it sucks:

1. it is a ty phone - i should not have to install a third party app to lock th screen on a call. This is basic stuff, and the developers suck for overlooking it. The sound quality is so-so at best, and the volume level at any given time is a crapshoot. And God for forbid I should have to answer another call while already on another..in RIM parlance, "Flash" means "Disconnect"...oh, so does any other button on the Storm.

2. it is a ty device - Lots of reasons for this one:
a: Slow application device. Bringing up a browser, GPS (more on this one later) or any other native app means that I will have to reboot later that day--period. Not a 'maybe' -- I will have to reboot to get performance back. I may even have to pull the batter...which leads me to...
b: I don't want to read "OMG!!!!" posts about how "fast" the latest Storm fake beta is.

3. RIM has become like Windows! Reboot should NEVER be a 'try this...' troubleshooting step. I don't wanna reboot my OS to fix an issue, nor should I have to unless it is an official hotfix.

4. RIM's policy of 'unofficial', BETA, Supersecret, 'I promise I won't tell anyone' software testing represents a fundamental failure as a development shop. If it is broken, fix it properly. Don't expect the Internet Forums to serve as Beta testing.

All things being equal, the IPhone sucks too. The difference is that the users DON"T HAVE TO DO ANYTHING. That is what the tech community does not get about Apple...the Zune will never beat the IPod even though it is better, Windows will continue to dominate desktops through "it's too hard to upgrade" rather than on technical merits. RIM, like Microsoft, damaged (not ruined) its repuation by not focusing on what it is good for...business. Rather, it let Apple pick the time, place, and weapons for the fight and responded with a device that was not ready for primetime and, in fact, has become a burden to the same people it counted on.

I will be giving up my Storm for a song on ebay. I'll post auction details as soon as I work it out with Verizon. Don't know what is better out there, but I'm glad I did not give up my 8830. I will also be evaluating new server options for our sales staff...I'm tired of supporting their Storm devices.

That's it...some lame thing that Mom's say to there kids?

I know you are but what am I.

I am rubber, you are glue. Whatever you say bounces off me and sticks to you.

Ring around the Rosie...

I thought we were adults here.

How about addressing the issues on their merits? my assertion is that from a techical perspective, RIM and Verizon both damaged their reputations by releasing a device that failed to concentrate on the things that made them great. The Storm is not a good phone or PDA.

First of all, wrong place. Go to the rants & raves if you have a bone to pick or need somewhere to vent, and it appears you do.

Second, while you might have an issue with your device, many don't. I don't, I'm guessing the guy above me doesn't since he didn't affirm anything you mentioned and most of all CrackBerry is full of users who, more often than not, are happy with their Storms.

And finally, the Storm is a Storm. It isn't a Curve, Bold, or Pearl. It is unique territory for RIM and represents unique challenges for creators, developers and users alike. It is not meant to perform like any other BB ever created and never will. Stability isn't there but it has been written numerous times how VZW pushed RIM to get this device out by Christmas time and in doing so RIM pushed a device to market that wasn't ready. You are a fool if you can't see the improvements in the leaked OS's...which by the way aren't leaked by RIM to make beta testers out of the general public. You are also a fool if you have been with RIM this long to not recognize and have faith in the fact that they are fixing the problems and looking to make this device stable. The iPhone had so many bugs in its infancy but it is now considered to be the best convergent device to hit the market. The Storm is heading and the right direction and I wouldn't want anyone else than RIM in my corner in this fight.

You miss my point. It is not a rant, the techical points I make are valid.

RIM and Verizon did not make any distinction between this device and previous devices in their marketing. They offered upgrades to users irrespectvie of their experience and made no mention of the 'users as beta testers' in the device marketing campaignes.

I see the improvements in the beta releases, but the dev philosophy that relies on Internet forums as feedback is fundamentally flawed. I also cannot be expected to push fake beta releases to a user community.

yes, the iphone is flawed and has been since release. My point is that the target audience was different. The Iphone had virtually no business - server based users, and RIM should not have made a ham-handed play for the Iphone users.

I knew getting into this phone I was going to have problems... The no locking when on calls pisses me off too.. That should have been a native app on the phone whoever forgot to do that should be fired from that company.

One thing I don't get is the IPhone was released in 2007, I find it HARD to believe that nobody knew they were working on something like that and didn't start doing it themselves... I am on my 3rd Storm I have had ridiculous problems with my previous 2 and this 3rd isn't what I would call a great phone either... I might have to goto my 4th not sure.

I am incredibly disappointed with RIM's inability to release an official software update for this phone, or give any kind of information on what they are trying to do to fix these problems they seem to just release the phone in other markets.. with the amount of returns and problems this phone could seriously damage there company..

My Storm is not ****. it is The ****. There is not one problem I have with it...except for the fact that I'd like it to have TV Out. But it's nothing to cry about. It works great. You're an engineer? You can't figure out how to properly upgrade a phone? Well hoohoohoo, too ******* bad! You took all that time to ***** about a phone that you don't know how to upgrade, when you could have already put it on Ebay, bought a new smart phone, and bragged about that. Or...you could have found a smart person to fix it. You're a do-nothing loser. You're an unproductive engineer. You should have convinced one of your admins to write this post of yours, because it sucked. It lacked good insults, or witty comments. You sir, are a failure...like your attempts at anything else in life. Why don't you engineer a nice little suicide note? Actually...let one of your admins do that for you too.

So you hate the Storm, iPhone, and all WM devices, you only have the G1 and Pre left.

sorry. didn't mean to **** off a bunch of people, nor did i see this a religion or as a personal issue.

I went to bat for RIM in our environment and manage several BES servers.

Yes, I have properly upgraded my phone...it still sucks compared to earlier RIM devices. I've wiped it and performed clean upgrades, I've upgraded existing OS.

Didn't realize that that the Storm community was so sensitve.

My overall point is that RIM has damaged their rep within the business community in order to win consumer business...at which they've also failed with the Storm.
